Accel headers

In 1993/94 I had a shop install headers on my 90.
They put Accel tri-y on it.
They didn’t put the part # on the receipt.
I’ve been searching the web and not finding any info.
They are aluminum coated,rusting some.

Are these any good ?

Re: Accel headers

I do remember them, Lingenfelter and Summit sold them. They were a good header from what I remember. Had a buddy put them on his '92 GTA back in the day, they were nice.

Re: Accel headers

They were VERY GOOD.

They were Accel brand, which SUMMIT picked-up the line. So did others. But then the parts were discontinued. Probably in the late 90s.

The weak link as I recall, was the crossover under the oil pan. On mine, I made a skid plate, which helped.

It runs below the subframe and is a big concern for me.
I haven’t hit it on anything yet though.

What method would you recommend?
They are welded to the Cats.

Re: Accel headers

Those sure look 100% like SLP tri-Y headers. SLPs are stainless but its a low grade stainless and they do have some carbon in them so they will rust.
Try to wire wheel a rusty spot and see what it looks like.
The only way to do the welded on Ypipe, that I know of, is to cut it off at the welds, coat and re-weld.

FYI, the gaskets are no longer made so you'll have that to deal with when bolting the headers back to the Y pipe.

Re: Accel headers

Mine are defiantly Accel headers,I have the install receipt.
The shop that did the install was Accel authorized installation shop.
They are aluminum coated.
I have the SLP cat. back on the car.

TTop350 are those for the dual cats?
If so are they For sale?

Re: Accel headers

A lot of places sell other companies parts under their own name. Now could it be SLP bought the exclusive rights to sell them, sure but it could be Accel/summit was selling SLP parts under their name too. Maybe thats why we can't find any info on Accel tri-Y headers? (I've looked a bit too)
I know SLP started selling these tri-Ys around 1987 and they went through a few changes. Not sure if/when Accel started?
I know SLP used some accel wire products before going to taylor wires.
Your headers look like a jet-hot coating to me, (which your install falls in the time SLP was offering jethot coating) have a few friends that the coating did just that, poor prep and rusted under the coating.
IIRC, The old aluminum coatings had a rough texture.

Those are a pic from the web. I do have 2 NOS sets of early SLP tri-Ys for dual cats but are planned to go on cars soon.

Re: Accel headers

Made a quick phone call to accel, the reps catalog only went back to 1994 but he did say that accel has never offered headers???
Def need to add this to my future research.

I did just find this. I do know Lingenfelter did use SLP headers on his early stuff.

Re: Accel headers

Accel did have 3rd gen headers back then along with the much more popular C4 design. Most of the Accel catalog was Lingenfelter stuff mass marketed through a larger company.

Re: Accel headers

I'm looking at a 1991 catalog from Accel. Tri-Y with 1-5/8" primaries with 3" collectors. Mandrel bent 14 gauge steel with air fittings and O2 bungs standard.

82-91 single cat #74400
82-91 dual car #74401

There is only a pic of a C4 system on the page.

Re: Accel headers

Wow
Never thought I'd see another set.
Pulled mine and dropped it off at the ceramic coating yesterday.

The finish isn't very good on them, mine only had 3K miles but many years sitting in the garage.

Glad you posted the pictures.
When I pulled them I found that the gaskets were leaking bad where they bolt to the heads.
That is the wrong gasket they supplied.
I thought the installer used the wrong ones, very surprised to find out they were sold with the wrong ones.
The headers are round ports and the gaskets are for square ports.

Sorry, no instructions, when I bought them from the original owner he said all they gave him was a Accel product sheet and a receipt. Both of which are long gone. Here are few more pic in my phone.

They need to be brought back into production because they have bigger tubing and Ypipe than SLPs

Re: Accel headers

Good looking design! I would "assume" they would make better low end torque than a true shorty?

Was any magazine testing ever done? Any direct comparison to other designs?

Re: Accel headers

Dougs91Z and Big Block 73 thank you for all the pics especially these:

I bought a 90 Formula350 orphan with most of the system but almost no Y-pipe and seeing the layout will help me reconfigure them!
