Hey all im new to thirdgen. Thought id share my build with you. It started as a dream of always wanting one of the 80's IROC racing series cars. They seemed to take a good looking car and make it look better. So after finding a 3rd gen circle track late model a little out of my reach and not streetable in California. I found this 91 RS as a doner to my dream.
Then it was time for some body mods. It had to look like an IROC racing series car. I found fivestar sold the nose. And with a call found although not marketed they still have the ASA Racing series molds. So i got panels.
Yes i left the stock fenders as a mounting point for the fenders. To me it was easier as im not doing a tube chassis nascar. Its going to be a caged car, but made to work with stock suspension mounting points to keep it affordable. And its still going to work good.
they actually got cut up a bit more than this but i didn't take photos.
Ok with my new door panels you are up to date on my build. Got my Wilwood road racing brakes in, plan on starting that install on sunday. Still have a little inner fender mods to do for tire clearance at the same time. After that ill start on my new seats, then the cage. Ill post as i go...
Thanks guys. Its been a lot of work. Everything you see here was started in January and went to just a couple weeks ago. Rushing through it all in photos makes it seem more simple than it was. A lot of fitment. Also a day job cuts into work time lol.

For longer drives maybe some steel belted radials on whatever diameter rim required...
although big diameter rims on your vintage racer would not look as nice.

Yeah i plan to get some street tires for it. Ive driven it to work and back a few times on the hoosiers (About 7 miles) just to shake it down. Not that it was bad, but ive noticed they dont hold air very well unless youre building heat. Not to mention a higher mileage tire would be better.
It is fun. I cant wait to have it finished to use it on the track and street. Im using it to see how much fun i have and possibly a stepping stone to more of a real race car. Ive seen some good deals time to time on circle track late models that could be reskinned as 3rd gens. but thats a decision for down the road.

Nevermind a little search of the internet i found you cut the stock caliper mounting ears off and use the dust shield bolt holes. But i went to the junkyard and got a doner spindle to try it out on. Looks like itll work now.
This car is too cool! What an awesome them for s street car! I bet with that much sidewall with those 15's and that wide of stance it probably rides amazing down the road compared to some of the low pro 19" setups too

Not sure what you were asking but I have a pretty good idea. I HAD a spare set for the same reason. I had some Aeromotive brakes on the car for a few years. They used NF thread bolts to mount the bracket to the spindle. I didn't like they way they worked and put some Willwood drag brakes on. They use NC thread bolts so I had to use the 2 spare spindles I had to mount the new calipers.
I haven't been to the local junkyard in a while now. Getting harder and harder to find donor cars for parts like that. Not much left of my car that's stock anyway.

well my problem was similar. i noticed the brake kit said it was made to work specifically with the factory dual piston caliper spindles. So i looked in my dealer service manual and saw there was a different spindle that the caliper mount bolted on separately. I thought to make my life easier try and find some. But those spindles are pretty much non existent. Then i did more research and found the dust shield bolt holes on my standard spindles are the correct location, but you need to hack off the stock caliper mounts. Thats why i got a doner just to make sure.

Yeah its not bad. But i opted for the race weight coils on the weight jacks. So its a little stiff. But i also haven't tried adjusting the shocks any softer yet? Its definitely stable though. Thanks for liking the look. Its just been something i always wanted. I was going to do an all out racecar, but thought i should do one streetable first to enjoy it more. Then down the road maybe get a tube chassis car to build. First things first...
These are the holes to drill and tap bigger Mark where to cut Cut...grind fit. Since i was there, I had to grind the casting marks down to smooth them out. Then painted. Next... Put it all together.

Well the nice guys at Wilwood sold me the brakes. They kindly told me if i really want to race it i need the road race kit front and rear. Also got their master cyl. Bought a master relocation kit off amazon since im doing it as a manual brake no power assist. But if you aren't going to race it all out you can save a LOT of money buy getting a standard kit.
be forewarned once you put the stiff torque arm with urethane bushings your rear end will whine. Not as much as the Pontiac in the video. But pretty noticeable. I like the gear whine so its ok for me. Ive got a buddy trying to sell me a Doug Nash 5 speed. But im trying to keep this car more street friendly so not sure ill do that. Ive got a small 335 race engine i built years ago on a stand crying to go in this car too. But with 12.5:1 compression i dont want to run race gas all the time. Again future projects or later evolution of this car, guess we'll see?

that 55 will be cool with not a whole lot done to it other than basic legal stuff or are you restoring to race in a vintage class?i had a 55 Chevy a few years ago but it was pretty rough
so i dumped it to fix my 72 chevelle,that ended up needing too much so it went bye bye.now ive got my third gen and that's it,love the vintage race car ,stock car,trans am/scca look

Yeah you will for sure hear the rear gears whine after you install the new torque arm. Its not a brand thing all aftermarket ones with the stiffer bar and rigid bushings do it. Just means you need louder exhaust...
And my dads chevy not really building it to race, but its really still set up to race. Just 1968 specs... Its just one of those cars my dad always wanted. So we added brake lights and headlights and mufflers to be street legal. We may repaint it in the future. But we arent over restoring it. It would be done as if ready for the next weekend.
I searched my emails and found the catalog page i was given for part numbers. They are limited to what they have available since this isnt a currently used body style. You need to call for price and availability. Again these are race car panels and require a bit of work to use them as i have. Fiberglass working skills are a must.
Just to update you all whats going on. So i totally forgot these Camaro 10 bolt rears have 2 different style housing ends where the rear brakes bolt on. So i decided to save my money up and do something i was planning on doing down the road.
So last Thursday i made the trip out to Sylmar and met Kenny Sapper at Speedway engineering and picked up my Grand National rear floater kit. Cool guy and great place. If you ever get the chance i recommend you stop buy and see them.
So after that i pressed in my 5/8" studs and pressed on the rotor adapters and took them to Currie Enterprises to make me a 9" ford housing with all the Camaro brackets on it. I got oil cooler fittings and AN breather fittings for it that i gave them a drawing on where to put them.
So right now all my money is focused on the rearend. Once it comes together ill take some photos for you.

Well im not wealthy by any means. This is for sure a budget build for me. Its more labor than anything. Luckily i can do most if it myself. I just do little at time. Also it took me some time to get used to not having a wife that used up most my money each week. I live simple and my hobbies can get more attention. This build besides the floater rear end is fairly easy to do yourself. You can do it Bandit...
