Impulse buy 92 Z03 Z28
this morning I got a call from a buddy who was at a tow yard auction just outside of town, he says “don’t you like those ****** camaros?” Ofcourse I do.. so I had him send me pics and it had a big wing, stripes, and a tuned port motor so I said if it goes cheap buy it and I’ll pay you for it. 25 min later he texts me “that camaro will be at your shop in an hour” I took the day off so I haven’t seen it yet but my dad was at the shop to unload it. It looks good to me, rust free L98, G92, N10, Z03, Z28. Idk what the heck I’m going to do with it but I own it now??? I’ll see it in person tonight. It said “bad motor” on the windshield but they jump started it and drove it into the shop when they unloaded it at my place.

It’s a high mile rig, it’s got 157k. I just stopped by for a quick peek at it. The carpet is in good shape, the upholstery is in great shape, the factory red floor mats are in it and in good shape, it has a stock delco CD player that works, under the hood is wildly unmolested, and in remarkable shape for the miles, has PBR rear brakes, a wonder bar, the dual cats and factory exhaust are in nice shape, not a spot of rust in the whole car, it’s really not a bad car! Idk what the heck I’m going to do with it!

Re: Impulse buy 92 Z03 Z28
I just bought it because it was a complete Z03, and I always loved red interior, if anyone is super interested I would let it go, and don’t need to make a ton of money on it. But I don’t know how cost effective it would be to ship it. This weekend I’m going to clean it all up, detail it inside and see about taking it for a drive.

What a deal! That is a sharp car for that kind of money. In Upstate NY you never see third gens in that condition sell that low.

Re: Impulse buy 92 Z03 Z28
Ok so I did a little bit of digging, I understood wrong when my guy told me they drove it into the shop. There was no battery even in it, and it does not run. The motor is good and broken too. Rotates about 5 degrees freely before the thing locks up. Everything else works, just not the motor Hahahaha oh well, I’m in it cheap enough

What a steal! Put a motor in it you just got the car for free.

Re: Impulse buy 92 Z03 Z28
Plan is to get it up in the air, jack the motor up enough to get the pan off it and see how bad it is, then put it back together after I know if the block is ok, and get it up in the air and on a rack in the back of the warehouse. I feel like even as parts it’s good to keep a car like this in stock since I have the room inside. I had a couple offers to buy it already, highest being $1800 so I think i might as well hoard it for a while.

Re: Impulse buy 92 Z03 Z28
What the... It doesn't look like a parts car to me. More like a Project Car and barely a project at that. If she's solid, and if you don't love her, I'm sure someone around here would love to rebuild the engine and save her. Maybe I've been spending too much time around my junk, but damn, that seems like a really solid starting point for a nice thirdgen.

Re: Impulse buy 92 Z03 Z28
No you’re totally right it is a great starting point, I definitely didn’t mean it would be a parts car. But even just as how many good parts it does have on it. I don’t need another project as of now, but that’s not to say I won’t want to fix it later. Luckily we have plenty of warehouse space so I will be able to get it out of sight and out of mind so it doesn’t end up sold. If I could get say $2500 for it, I would consider it but I didn’t buy it to flip. Heck I know the yellow letter delco CD player that works is worth good money by itself.

You know, got to thinking....Have you tried removing the belt and then turn the motor over by hand?? I remember awhile back someone I know bought a car that was "locked up" and would also turn a little bit, but not far. Turned out the A/C compressor was locked solid. We took off the belt and it turned over freely. New A/C compressor and car ran great! Just something to check because you never know!

Re: Impulse buy 92 Z03 Z28
I haven’t tried that but when I got a flywheel wrench on it you can feel something hitting in the bottom end for the small amount of turning it will do. I’m going to pull the pan and see what’s hitting. If it’s a broken rod I’ll try pulling it out from the bottom maybe? That way it’ll turn over atleast?

Re: Impulse buy 92 Z03 Z28
Pulling the pan is a ton of work with the engine in the car, and for what gain? just to see if the block is OK? If it's locked up that hard, just assume the entire short block is scrap, because it probably is. I'd sell it as is and pocket some cash, or put a long block in it and enjoy it. Taking it half apart and then letting it sit just hurts the value if you want to sell it in the future. Looks like a darn nice car and would be a piece of cake to get back into real nice shape.

I’m leaning towards an L31 long block with a SDPC lower intake. Man I wish this car was a convertible, I really want a drop top 91-92.

I can't help but feel pang of jealousy looking at those pics! A decent roller where I'm at is about $1k at least. That's an incredible find! Absolutely gorgeous. Keep us updated on what you decide to do to it.

Re: Impulse buy 92 Z03 Z28
picked the fresh block, and rotating assembly from the machine shop today. I’m going to put a set of fresh mildly worked over 113 aluminum L98 Corvette heads on it, and I have a 95 LT1 camshaft, and a set of 1.6 roller tip self aligning rockers on it. I also got a set of magnesium Corvette L98 valve covers to go on the motor as well. It’s so unmolested under the hood I kind of want to keep the factory exhaust manifolds on it and have them coated ceramic cast iron color. But I know it would be a waste with making the motor hotter without headers, and I have a nice set of Hooker 2460’s with a y pipe in my shop I could toss on it. We’ll see after I get the longblock assembled i feel about it!

I posted this car up for sale, I wouldn’t be mad at freeing up some funds if the right deal was made.
