factory locking lug nut question

A search didn't turn this up so..
Is there any way to determine what pattern you have in the key for the locking lug nuts?
I didn't lose mine but I got to thinking..a spare for the tool box would be a nice thing to have.
There are no #'s stamped on the key or lug nut.

Re: factory locking lug nut question

In the rear locking hatch on mine, there is a sticker in there with the info for the locking key. Without that, I don't think there is a lot you can do, save looking through a box of them, I don't think there all that many variations of them, kind of like the keys. Chances are your key will open every 24th car or something (may not be that low, but the key is eventually going to be the same for another car), for the same model year. A buddy of mine used to take the keys he would find at the junk yard and keep them for the old cars, he had enough of them saved that he was able to open doors and trunks at the JY when he was looking for stuff, lol

Re: factory locking lug nut question

IIRC, there are 15 different keys used with the stock style locking lugs. The sticker with the key code would have originally been on a three segment card. One segment was the sticker, another was like a wallet size reference card, think the third section was instructions for how to use the codes and the segments. The card, the lugs, and the key would have been delivered with the car in a plastic bag, and the nuts would have been installed by the dealer during prep or left for the owner along with the owners manual and other references. I've seen a lot more cars with the 3-segment card simply tucked in the owners manual, than having the sticker peeled and stuck inside the car.

Kind of a moot point really, because it's anyone's guess if the exact lugnut key is even still available. If you lose the key, you'd be further ahead to destructively remove the locking lugnuts and simply buy a new set. At least in the mid 2000's, the full set of 4 lugs and a new key were less expensive from the dealer, than trying to order just the key anyway.

Egg samples. Key code in red ink redacted since these locks are on one of my cars. I've got another card printed in blue ink, that I'm pretty sure was from 87, the green were used in the 90s.

Almost forgot the bag... Pretty sure I have a better example around here somewhere, but this is the one I can find right now...

Thanks for the info folks.
Replacing the factory ones with after market before I lose the key might be the way to go. lol
I will check the car and owners manual for the card..I don't remember seeing it though.
