Clear Lube for rubber parts/Caliper Rebuild

I recently purchased two new PBR calipers. Both seemed to be in nice shape. ....I thought I had a problem with one of the pistons not compressing all the way, so I disassemble both calipers to compare. Turns out both are fine, however I nicked the rubber sleeve that goes over the threaded rod in the back of the piston. $8 dollars later I have a "soft/seals" rebuild kit with a new sleeve, but no clear lube.

Does anyone know what that clear lube is? -or what I can use in place of it? -again, it goes on the rubber sleeve in the back of the piston.

Re: Clear Lube for rubber parts/Caliper Rebuild

I didn't even use the lube that came with the rebuild kits. I was able to just gently slide the seal over the threaded part. I am not even certain that is where the lube should be used, I don't think that is where it said to use it in the instructions. I would think any type of grease would suffice if you want to use it in that location.
If you PM me after 6pm EST I can look at the kit I have and see if there are any identification for the lube packet and in the instructions.

Re: Clear Lube for rubber parts/Caliper Rebuild

I will try to do that.

.....I have no instructions as to where it goes, but both calipers (upon disassembly) had lube there. Not gooped on, but a film that you could feel between your fingers after touching it.

Re: Clear Lube for rubber parts/Caliper Rebuild

Mine were old junky/abused calipers, so I didn't really see much when I pulled them apart. The bores were mostly OK, so I cleaned all the small parts, blasted them, painted and assembled. I do remember there being a decent amount of lube under the mushroom(?) cap for the pivot for the parking brake lever, there was a ton of dirt built up under that, that is why I think the lube is mostly for other parts.

If you check out post 9 here:
https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/brak...r-caliper.html

....and open the first file, you will see they reference part number 11 as taking ONLY liquid lubricant. Part 11 being that black rubber sleeve in question. It's labeled in the "illustration" file.

Re: Clear Lube for rubber parts/Caliper Rebuild

I don't think my kit is from PBR, but another company. I don't think it came with "liquid lubricant", just a small packet of grease. My kits were quite comprehensive compared to the ones available now.

Sucks that these parts were relatively low production and we don't have all the factory components such as the "liquid lube" available now

Re: Clear Lube for rubber parts/Caliper Rebuild

If it's the rubber I'm thinking of, it doesn't come into contact with brake fluid, so I would give it a touch of silicone grease and call it good. Silicone grease from the plumbing section of your local hardware store. I go through a tub of the stuff every few years, works great for weatherstripping and rubber, o-rings, plastic sliding parts, etc. It's pretty much inert, odorless, and won't eat rubber.

It's permafrost in the tundra here... it's more nearly clear when it's in a more nearly habitable climatic zone

I like super lube, you can buy it at harbor freight and home depot now. You can use it to grease your fancy red bushings also, not sure if you can do that with regular silicone.

That's good to know! ...I hadn't asked THAT question yet, but I was actually wondering if they required a special lube.

Metal to metal parts can use petroleum based products but metal to rubber should use a high pressure capable silicone-esque product.

I'd like to see someone try to stop me.

I've been lubing damn near everything with silicone plumbers lube for years now. If it's rubber or poly and it's supposed to slide...
