1982 Camaro Total Production numbers?
All I can find for a total number is 189,747 on a few different websites.....but that number cant be right. My VIN ends in 211934 UNLESS the sequence number did NOT start at 000000??? The car was built the 2nd week of September, 1982. I know its gotta be one of the last days of 1982 production, or very close to it. I'm just curious what the last production day is?....Or how many were built later than mine? Mine has some 83 features, too.......black engine, pass side vanity mirror, etc. Anyone have any insight?

The last 6 digits start at 100001, not 000001. So, after crossing 99,999, the VIN sequence would start with 2xxxxx.

Re: 1982 Camaro Total Production numbers?
Did a Wikipedia search to see first production was October 12, 1981. Apparently a late production 1982 model, at 111,934. Honestly, though, when I first looked at your plate my brain was saying early production. You actually have a very late production. Can't be much after when they started with the '83's. I should add that with the two assembly plants I don't think it's possible to track sequence by the VIN when combining cars from each plant. Seems to me studying VINs for a while that each plant was assigned a block of numbers that did not correlate sequentially between plants.

Yep, I think 82 production ended the 2nd week of September, 1982.....the week my car was built. It left the factory on September 9th. So, what I'm wondering now is if Norwood cars (mine is a Van Nuys) also ended with 100001 VIN numbers. They would never be the same VIN number because of the N and L difference in them??

My guess is they did not duplicate sequence numbers between the plants. Would love to have those lists and dates.

I would love to see the lists and dates, too. The sequence numbers dont make any sense at all if they're not duplicated between plants.......there's no way that 78,000 cars were built after mine when mine was built at the very end of the production run.

Thanks man. It was a long time ago. 1989. That's the reason why I bought the car that I have......its a twin to his.....
My car.....
And my brother and his car. He rolled the car and was killed less than 2 months after this pic was taken. He had raced it that day at our local 1/8th mile dragstrip....

Here is a Norwood '82 formerly for sale (possibly in 2016). Body plate looks like C 09A 162,725 (sequence 62,725). A black engine paint car?

Yep, it's a late enough build that it has the black engine like my car

Above and below are photos of Norwood 30,581 built 4th week of May. Might Norwood have sequence numbers lower than the range for Van Nuys? To early to surmise.

Re: 1982 Camaro Total Production numbers?
I think this is the end of my '82 VINs where I also have build date information. This is Van Nuys 76,375 possibly built June 17, 1982. Can make out what appears to be 06-17 at upper left of build sheet. For sure it is post February 03, 1982 based on the EPA economy message on the window sticker. Car is still on Craigslist in Youngstown.

Re: 1982 Camaro Total Production numbers?
So the way it looks is the Camaro's had sequence numbers by plant, that both started with 100001. The 09A car is almost at the end of the model year like mine and is sequence number 62,725. My car was built a week later at a different plant and is sequence number 111,934. Add our sequence numbers together and it's near the 189,747 total.
Evidently Van Nuys built A LOT more Camaros than Norwood did.....I wonder how the firebird numbers are....

z28cop on this board had a late build 82 Z28 with the black engine, too. I believe his was a Norwood car. Maybe he'll chime in if he has a sequence number for his. I'm pretty sure his was a 09A car

Re: 1982 Camaro Total Production numbers?
I added Brian's name. I think he'd be pleased to be commemorated here, as he is throughout this forum. Obviously was a car fan and thirdgen fan.
Looking forward to tracking more VIN as they come about. I think now we can start pinning down some intermediate numbers to fine tune the sequences.
I have quite a few '84 VINs to correlate. I think was a good discovery identifying the VIN methodology between plants. Probably old news on this forum, but new to me as of today. Thanks.

Excellent information. Thank you.
I’ve been incorectly using term “sequence number” for VIN. Good to know that as well. Thank you.

Hi, I know it's been a while since you posted this! I had the same question as you about my 82 Z28. It's a Norwood car, 63688. I know it's been built in september 82. I figured that mine was made september 10 if I start from 09A (62000) and add around 370 cars made everyday. Oh! By the way, I'm from Quebec, Canada and writing a book about my car! If you have other informations like this, I'll take them!

As I understand it the A will be days 1 through 4 on that calendar. Or first row. B is second row. Etc.
So high Norwood sequence number in week 1? What do you think? I have not gone back up this thread enough to research my own question/answer.

Re: 1982 Camaro Total Production numbers?
Yeah... I dont't know ! I was getting that date taking Z28cop date and VIN number. Here's how I got there...
So, my VIN number tells me my car was the number 63688. That's the biggest number we have right now for Norwood plant. We also have number 111934 from the other plant. I took both numbers and divided them by the total number of Camaros done that year (189747). That gave me 34% for Norwood and 59% for Van Nuys. So I round up those numbers to 40/60 because the number we have for Van Nuys is in week 9B, they were nearer the end of production. If I take the last number we have for both plants and I add them, it give me 175622. I substracted that number to the total number and it gave me 14125. That is the number of cars done after both our cars. To know how much was done to each plant I multiplied that number by 40 and 60 %. That gave me 5650 cars for Norwood and 8475 for Van Nuys, bringing the total number for each plant to 69338 and 120409, which is 189747 when we add them. From the spreadsheet posted earlier, I assume that, at the beginning of week 9A, they were at number 62000. I took 69338 which is the total number of cars made and substracted 62000 from it, to know how much cars they made that month. That gave me 7338 that I divided by 4 weeks to get 1835. Now,if I add 1835 to 62000, it gives me 63835 which is plausible as mine is in week A and is number 63688. Then I divided 1835 by 5 to know how much they made each day. I got 367 cars a day, which make sense as we saw that they were producing like 750 cars a day including the Firebirds. It's like near 50/50. Finally, I added 637 to 62000 for monday (62637), again for tuesday (62734), and wednesday (63101), and thursday (63468), and finally, friday (63835). So, by my number, I knew it was made friday. But which week ? Do I begin counting from august 30th or september 6th ? I chose september 6th because of z28cop ship date (9/9). His car would have been made tuesday (62680) and shipped two days later. I don't know if it make sense or not! Is 2 working days enough to ship it or it would be like 7 working days instead?
Did a lot of maths here! Are you awake? lol!

Fun to do.
If you have $50 to burn you can get dates off the dealer invoices (Vehicle Invoices) from GM, available through the GM link in my signature.
