'87 GTA Power Antenna Stuck Up, Won't Retract
Hi everyone,
The power antenna in my '87 GTA is no longer retracting when the power on the factory Delco stereo is turned off, so it's *stuck* in the up position. The antenna/motor assembly was replaced with an aftermarket in Jan 2018, so it's practically brand new. Any ideas on what could be wrong, or how to troubleshoot?

Key on, engine off...turn the radio on, then turn it off. Can you hear the motor running? Does it ever STOP running?
When my cable broke, the motor ran until I pulled the fuse to stop it.
I supposed you'd have heard the motor and known this was the issue, but I thought I'd ask.

Mine was not on a dedicated fuse. When I pulled it, I lost my interior light I believe.
There's also a relay for it, hidden here.

Okay.. hmm. I will try to pull that lower piece and inspect the relay. It could be that it still has the factory relay, and just the power antenna was replaced in 2018.

No relay. I even pulled the lower plastic piece and inspected underneath... nothing found. It appears that 2 wires fo directly from the radio to the power antenna, but I can't be certain...

Wow, already? Damn. According to the receipt I have dated 1/18/18, the aftermarket power antenna was $185.33 and labor was $179.95. I wonder what POS one they put in???

Re: '87 GTA Power Antenna Stuck Up, Won't Retract
This is the stock power antenna for a third gen. And these work quite well I might add. I rebuilt my old factory one with a NOS mast for a vette but it only lasted a year or so because even the NOS plastic mast pusher was probably pretty weak. It broke and for a week or so I had to pull the fuse and lose my interior lighting and power seat.
Just do the job right and get the factory antenna unit and wire it up like the factory did.

How do I get to the antenna? It looks like I need to pull the front right wheel, and then remove the plastic wheel well covering. Confirming that's correct?

Re: '87 GTA Power Antenna Stuck Up, Won't Retract
Just in case anyone has thought about cutting the power antenna on a 3rd gen F-Body to remove it when it's stuck in the up position. THERE IS ANOTHER WAY!!
Don't cut the antenna as replacements can cost hundreds of dollars and modifications are almost always required . Instead, here is a step-by-step approach to removing your stuck power antenna.
STEPS
1.) Remove the wheel well plastic housing and rotate the tires to provide lots of clearance.
2.) Remove the brackets holding the antenna in place by removing a few screws. You will have to rotate the motor mechanism to access the remaining two screws once you take off the first bracket screw. REMOVE ALL BRACKET SCREWS including the bracket itself and then remove the black antenna wire by removing two small screws.
3.) There are 3 wires attached to the power antenna. You may find another method; however, I just cut them.
4.) Pull theantenna mechanical unit connected to the aerial towards the wheel well while lightly pushing down on the antenna until the unit pops out from behind the fender. NOTE: The aerial may bend slightly as a result of significant forces exerted on it to pull it through the top and structure of the fender.
5.) Once the top of the aerial clears the fender top hole and substructure, pull it out through the wheel well until the entire unit is removed.
