My New 86 T/A

Hey thought I would introduce my self since I just picked up this on the weekend. 1986 T/A - 305 LG4 - Manual - WS6 - Rear Disc - Overhead Console. It needs lots of love but the price was right and had the options I wanted (t-top,manual,WS6). Engine Runs strong and that's about it. Shell is pretty good too. The electrical on the other hand not so good. Someone has made a mess of it during its life its going to take me some time to figure out. The interior as well is rough someone got carried away with a rivet gun on the door panels and made a mess of them. (I'll post more pics in a few weeks when I get back from work).

The plan for the car once its been gone over from top to bottom (which i haven't had time to do yet brought it home put it in the garage left for work the next day) its most likely going to come completely apart and restored and upgraded in a pro touring style. See last picture from Forza on the X-Box for my inspiration for this car. Its going to be a father/son project even though hes only 3 he's very mechanical inclined toddler.

Bit on my Background This is the 3rd Firebird/Transam I've owned. My very first car was an 84 V6 5spd, the second an 86 T/A 5spd it was a street/strip car ran very low 11's in the 1/4 mile however in the end It looked good but the body was rotten and i ended up parting it out. Owned a mix of others cars from Civics, Neons all done up and a 05 Mustang GT looked stock but was far from it. I also wrench on and do data acquisition for Formula race cars.

As a new member myself, I think you’ll find this forum as the third gen family you never knew you had.

Re: My New 86 T/A

Going through my pics on my work laptop came across this. My first 86 T/A 5spd. First off I bought it this colour LOL with the intention of repainting the original blue but as i worked on it the colour grew on me. also being single at the time it was a good ice breaker with the ladies. This one had a 350 that was bored out and had ported and polished 400 heads and cam and roller rockers high rise intake ect. Never had it dyno'd but it ran low 11's on 10" slicks with stock 3.23 gears. It looked good from afar but underneath the rockers and quarters were rotten. who ever did the paint hid that well. i ended up parting this out made more than i had into it. Kind of wish i kept it but i just bought my first house and it didn't have a garage and my parents moved and I lost my garage space there too.

I bet that picture brings back good memories. Come to think about it it’s brought back some memories that I can’t believe I forgot. Back to my main thread to update it!

Re: My New 86 T/A

As promised here are some more pics of what I'm up against. I haven't had much time to work on it. Plus my wife decided to go back to school full time so this project might be on hold now. but I have to deal with all the wiring issues and the interior need "some" work and some missing panels replaced. Somebody during it its life got a little crazy with the rivet gun. On the plus side I changed the oil and tuned the carb got it running well and found out its not the original motor as far as i can tell. I actually think its a 350 but I haven't been able to gain access to the casting numbers yet. Reason I say its a 350 was because it took a PH8873 fram filter which is most common on 350's in the application charts I've seen. originally it said it took a PH30 for the 5.0L.

I had a video of it running but couldn't up load it wrong format

The plan still is shes going to come apart and I'm going do it right may take me longer but I'll hopefully have this forever.

Re: My New 86 T/A

I just ordered a NOS 86 OEM Service manual off Ebay (so it said looks near perfect shape never used, but you never know). I've also been seeing around 86 Preliminary Service manuals with a white cover. Does anyone know the difference between the two books?
