Belt squealing need help

Hi
I have a 88 GTA serp belt

I have a squealing at idel

I have bbk underwrite pulleys
And I changed my tensioner pulley and the a.c. delete pulley didn't fix it
I noticed that the hash marks on my tensioner ideling are not lined up
It's at 1 o'clock vs 12
Maybe I have the wrong size belt
It's new 91.5 "
Maybe I need 91 or 90.5
Or a new tensioner

Do you guys know what those marks mean
Which way is to loose
Which way is tighter
?

Re: Belt squealing need help

Try spraying some water on the belt...

If the noise gets louder you have an issue with the belt slipping, most likely due to incorrect tension or some sort of contamination on the belt and/or pulleys.

If it goes away temporarily and then comes back, you have a pulley alignment issue.

If theres no change, then probably a bad bearing in one of the accessories or tensioner pulley.

Re: Belt squealing need help

I told you I already changed tensioner pulley with a new one and I have a.c. delete pulley I changed it

I cleaned my lower crank pulley bbk
And the noise went away for from 1 day now it's back
I know I have a tiny leak from my water pump weeping hole that got the lower crank pulley damp
I just want to know what the hash marks are for on the tensioner

If it was anywhere close to being that loose new, the belt is too long or you got a defective belt that is longer than it should be. A new belt should be between the first three marks on the tensioner. The last mark is for a blown out, shot belt that is stretched beyond service limit.

Do you have a smog pump on your car ? If not you need a different belt than stock and MAY have to change your belt routing, a stock length belt will not work. IIRC '88 would need a shorter belt than stock for smog pump delete where as '89+ uses a longer belt (which I have).

Re: Belt squealing need help

I have bbk under drive pulleys
And I had to get a custom belt to fit it
And then I got a ac delete pulley and deleted my smog pump
The Napa belt under warranty so I just got a free one cause
But it's 91.5 " long and its on and no more equalling for now but it's still on The same hash mark
I think at happened is after I did the bbk underwrite pulleys my alt voltage at idel wouldn't charge my car
So I got a really small alt pulley from a shop here and after that now it's 14.3 ideling and it's fine now
But I never thought to resize the belt after that
Now I think I need a 91 or 90.5????
The noise is gone but if it wears out the inside in 1 year obv your right
Some thing is wrong
