1986 Camaro fuel gauge problems

Hello...I have a 1986 iroc-z with a carbureted 350 I swapped out of my 1976 GMC 1500. It has a mechanical fuel pump. I'm not sure if the old fuel pump is in the tank or not because when I got the car it had a carbureted engine and mechanical fuel pump already in it. My problem is that the fuel gauge tops out at half a tank and bottoms out at a quarter tank. Any ideas on what the problem could be?

Getting access to the fuel sending unit connectors is the difficult part on a third gen.

What is easier?:
  • dropping the rear axle and exhuast, and pulling the tank; or
  • chopping a hole in the rear panel (without chopping anything unintended), and repairing/resealing the panel

That's up to you.
