What is this

ok, I know what they do, I know how they are hooked up, I need a new set of them cause the caps are missing on mine and they are rusty, what are they called lol so I can do a search for them. "shock caps" is what I call them, but that doesn't turn up any hits when I search for 'em.

Try "strut tower caps/covers" or "strut tower mount".

www.spohn.net sells some Moog strut mounts, they are pretty expensive pieces though, about 200 shipped.

I could go for used ones that aren;t damaged. Mine are pretty cruddy, previous owner changed out the front shocks, and although he put some nice ones in, he really damaged the mounts, they are dented up and the caps are gone, looks crappy.

well, usually when you replace those, its not because of how they look, it is because the bearing has gone out, so i would not recommend buying used ones, if your car has alot of miles on it, you might want to replace those anyways with a pair of new ones.

make sure that they are mounts and not just bearings....

from gm your looking at around 450 to purchase new, some companies will sell you similar designs for around 200-250. others will sell the replacement internal bearing.

hunter motorsports makes a custom unit for roughly 380 with shipping that is the nicest out there for our cars.

to replace the existing bearing is a pita i hear, you can try your luck purchasing some through a junkyard for roughly 100+ or goin the other alternative. no way your getting new ones for $50 though.

if the caps are missing go to a gm dealership and order new ones for $4 and replace them. if they are rusted, remove them and either polish them or paint them so they look nice again.

or you can buy some used ones. i've got two sets i'm selling for 100 a piece and i know there are others out there.

here's what they look like polished.

It's a bit more than rust, the passenger side mount is dented up hardcore, looks like it was hit with a hammer no idea, it was a hack job, but the previous owner must've wanted functionality over looks. it is very functional.

either way you won't get something that will come close to replacing it for $50 bucks.

if they are that bad check a junkyard or pay at least 175+ for something different.

ozzga, everything you see that's shiny was ceramic coated after they were polished smooth.

unless it's aluminum it doesn't polish well. the caster/camber plates which this thread is about aren't aluminum; i was able to sand them down but even a finger print will leave rust marks after a solid day sitting out. the metal is very poris and has to be covered some how if you do what i did.

i painted them with a 1200 degree engine clear coat and it didn't even work. so i'm replacing them with some hunter motorsport versions whenever he starts back to work on them.

I have personally used the monroe strut mounts and they are very close to the orginal ones, they are the strut mount along with the bearing. So far I have had no problems what so ever.

Now seeing how long they last is another thing. Since I have only 5000 miles on them. It is interesting to why the gm ones are soo expensive and the monroes are so cheap.

I got mine at Jocko's auto parts here in Des Moines, but any auto zone, pep boys or anyother parts store should have them.
