Brake Problems

I own a 1984 Z28. It has a 350. I am having some somewhat serious brake problems.

It usually takes half a pedal (pressing down half way) to get any "good" braking done. Some people mentioned it could be the pads but they seem pretty ok. SOme people said the lines could be broken allowing fluid leaking or air getting in. I don't think this is it as there is no brake fluid on ground and the shop replaced the bad brake line.

So here's what I found out today. I had the engine running and I pressed down the pedal. I got the same, very sluggish feel. I however noticed the lid of the brake fluid res. was hopping up and down. I also noticed some bubbles inside the res. I then removed the lid and pressed the gas pedal and the fluid "geysered" up and spilled over. Some people are saying this could mean there is air trapped inside the braking system.

What I need to know is what this could be. Is it air being trapped? Is there ever supposed to be air in the res. ? Just anything that could help in solving this problem would be greatly appreciated.....Francisco

I just did complete front brakes - everything but calipers. With the lid off, pressing the pedal will make it "geyser" like that - the path of least resistance without cover in place is out the reservoir. I did notice a HUGE difference with new rubber brake lines - I had done pads only in the past, but never got the stopping power I have now with new rubber lines. You mentioned a brake hose being replaced - only one side? I'd never only do one side - the new hose will withstand so much more pressure, that the old one may bulge on the other side - the old one could possibly burst now. Anything with brakes needs done to both sides at same time. I would also say bleed them again - bleed them alot. When I bleed mine, I do it like 8-10 times on each wheel - takes lots of fluid, but worth the effort.

I agree with the previous Post about replacing the stock rubber brake hoses & Bleeding the system. However: I would use the Braided Stainless Steel lines as replacements.

Update.....Brake Problems.

For starters bled front brakes. Didn't want to keep mom outside too long since she was the one helping me out. Here's the info so far.

When I first started I had no pressure when the engine was either on or off. Now, when the engine is off, the brakes have a real hard feel to them which is great. However, when the engine is on, I lose like at leats 40% - 50% of the brake pressure. What could be causing this pressure loss? I am going to bleed the rears and fornt again soon enough. just need some info on current problem.....francisco
