'88 rear calipers not working right????

I have read around here on the boards that rear disc calipers on '85-'88 3rd Gens are defective or bad in some way and that they '89-92 ones are better. I have an '88 IROC with rear discs and when I tried to replace the rear pads using a c-clamp a few months ago I literally bents the clamp, YES bent a cast iron c-clamp. My fronts where no problem but the rears where horrible. I did manage to get the piston in enough to get the new pads in on the drivers side but the pass. side has the suspension arm going to the caliper and I did not have a impact wrench to get if off. I am going to tackle my whole brake system soon and was wondering if I can replace my rear calipers with '89-92 ones or even go the 1LE route in the rear for now without any major modifications. I have not dived into this yet so it could be a clogged hose or something but my brakes are squealing really bad but there is plenty of material left on all my pads, I know I need to get my rotors turned, possible replaced and flush and bleed the whole system. While I am at it im going to replace all my rubber lines too, w/almost 140K on the car I know they could use replacing. If any could shed some light on what I can do about my rear calipers I would truly appreciate it.

I just found some info about doing the 1LE conv. on the rear - too much to do for just a daily driver. Could I just purchase '92 loaded rear disc brake calipers and mount them. I found the info about the 1LE swap and the failure of '84-91 (I stand corrected on my quote above) rear calipers and whats needed to fix them at http://www.isthq.com/~dan/1LEbrake.html
Tons of info here! It just seems like it would be easier if I could just get some loaded '92 calipers if they would work. If any one knows it will please let me know.

I'm sorry I can't anwser all your questions, but just so you know ALL 89-92 rear discs brake setups are considered "1LE" style. Also, if you changed calipers, you would have to change rotors too. The 88 rotors are 10.5", while the 89-92 are 11.65".

I was able to pick up an '89 9 bolt Borg warner 3.27 Posi rear end with the complete disc brake setup (even the master cylinder) for only $250 (I replaced the non posi drum brake 3.23 rear end in my 87).

Sounds like you got one heck of deal with that rear end Mike. Replacing rotors and calipers, hmmmm, will have to see how much it costs for everything. I just wish more people knew about the recalls on the '85-91 rear calipers. I wonder if i just bought some new loaded '88 calipers, I wonder if they would be ok. Thanks for the info Mike.
