Spohn SFC's, get them coated or bare?

I'm going to be getting Spohn SFC's this spring and I was wonder if powder coated, or if uncoated is the way to go. Would I be just as well off if I primered and painted them myself? It would save some valuabled dough if I don't have to sacrafice anything.

Something else, if you all think the powder coat is the way to go, do you think Steve would do them in orange for me?

If you powder coat then you are going to have to wire brush part of it off for welding. If you have the money go powder coated last a very long time. If you primed them yourself that would work fine just won’t look as good as power coating. It doesn’t matter because no one is going to see that anyway.

Has anybody here got them without the powder coat? If you have tell me what you would do now if you were going to get them. Would you have gotten them coated or are you satisfied?

I just order a pair from Steve, haven't got them yet. I order mine bare and purchased some POR-15 to coat them with. The complete kit will cost you about 15 bucks more than going with the powder coat but it will save you some time because of the fact that you have to grind all the spots that will be welded. Also I figure I'll have some POR-15 left over to do whatever else I find. POR-15 is said to be just as strong as a powdercoat.

I don't think Steve will do custom powdercoatings for you but that's something you will have to ask him. If you really want them orange POR-15 offers a varitey of colors to choose from. Going with a colored topcoat for POR-15 will cost you extra. They claim there undercoat can't be topcoated with any paint, you have to use their topcoats if you want it to last. I just went with the plain black undercoat.

I just can't see the point of powdercoating if you've got to grind it off to weld. After you weld, you've got to hit those spots with paint or undercoating, so it's going to look like it's got the measles if you don't repaint the whole bar anyway.

Yeah, I've already decided to get bare. Because it's gonna be cheaper mainly, and I figure paint will do just as good. I might hit it with some hi-temp paint around the exhaust though.

... they're right, you're not really going to see them, so primered would be fine. On my 4th Gen SS they are powdercoated and I've got to redo the leading edge of them from the rock chips.

POR-15 is some great stuff. I've used it on suspension components on my 4th Gen. (wear gloves and don't get it on anything you don't intend it on)

I wasn't going to leave them primered, I was going to primer them and paint them. Just with cheap spray can though.

I installed mine primered, so only primer would have to be removed for welding, then went over them after installation. I kinda wish I'd painted the sections that are hidden when installed just so I know they won't rust or anything, but it's too late for that..

Like I stated eailer in this post I just ordered the POR-15 kit which consisted of a QT of por-15 black, QT of marine clean (for cleaning the metal of any contaminates), and 20 oz of metal ready (for etching the bare metal prior to painting). The whole kit cost me $61.95 including shipping. It's a little more than ordering them powder coated but it will save me time in the way of grinding off the weld points.

I haven't recieved my sub-frame connectors yet but the way I plan on doing it is first to paint the top parts that will be hidden against the floor pan, leaving about a 1/4 inch strip on each side for welding. Then once it's welded in place I'll paint the rest, I should be able to sqeeze a brush in between the floorpan and sub-frame connector and cover up the 1/4 inch strips I left.

If anyone is interested you can visit their website. www.por-15.com and order one of their free catalogs this will explain all of their products in detail. Sorry I haven't figured out yet how to insert a hyperlink on this board.
