What tools do I need to know what codes my computer is putting out?

Axle/Gears: 3.23
connect the A and B terminals of the ALDL connector with a wire or paperclip (upper right hand terminals), turn the ignition on the ON position and the CHECK ENGINE LIGHT will blink the codes.
Ok, I just did this and my SES light started blinking but no codes were shown, not even a code 12. Does code 12 only appear if there is a error code or should it appear even if there is no error code?

yes the Code 12 should always be there. You have to count the blinks. It should repeat 3 times then go to the next code if any. If no code 12 then it may be a problem with the ECM itself.
