vortec camshaft

I remember seeing a thread a while back about a brand new $50 vortec camshaft, but i cant find the thread and forgot what online parts store that sells it. I already have an LT1 cam but remember that the vortec billet cam was alittle milder and should run good with my 1.6 rockers. I dont want to go too aggresive with the 305 because i dont want to deal with the tuning right now. THANKS

Any cam bigger than stock will require tuning. The stock Prom is that bad. Other cars can get away with a cam swap and use the stock tune but they have more forgiving systems than ours. Even an LT1 cam with 1.5 rockers doesn't run right without tuning. And that we be right at what you are looking for. If you took a milder cam and used 1.6 rockers you would be in LT1 territory with 1.5's.

Second to that last cam on that page.

As you'll see, the duration is only slightly less than an LT1 cam, but the lift is A LOT less. This allows you to use stock springs and not have to worry about retainer-to-valve seal clearance or coil bind.

You can use 1.6:1 rockers to get the lift up near the LT1's, but that means more money spent for new rockers, as well as springs, and maybe having to get the valve guides machined down.

For a quick replacement, it's a good deal.

If you're trying to mock an LT1 cam, it isn't a good deal. You'd be better off getting the LT1 cam.

i already have an LT1 cam sitting in my room and i already have 1.6 rockers on my car. I just wanted to go alittle milder. I am happy with my quarter mile times right now, i was just trying to lay out my options. By january i plan on adding an Edelbrock Performer TBI intake, and install my Pro Built tranny and 2400 stall ACT torque converter. I was also thinking about changing the timing chain so i thought, what the hell, i might as well throw in a cam. I was just thinking that the vortec cam would be easier to tune with less duration and lift. Ill probably install this stuff after my emissions testing in december so that ill have another 2 years to get it tuned right. Also, after i graduate college (1-1.5 years more), i plan on getting a 350 after i am settled. I just enjoy working on my car and am looking for alittle short term power. Possibly low 14s on stock heads. Im hoping the tranny, torque converter, cam, new timing chain, valve springs, and Performer TBI can knock off at least another half a second.

Yes it will work. The Vortec engines that these come from are Gen I blocks. L31

Shifty is right, your computer will freak. I wouldnt run it too long without tuning. If you're going to put the LT1 in later, I wouldnt bother a hold-me-over with the Vortec cam.

My .02 of course, you've had better luck than I have so far so I guess you can take it with a grain of salt...

well the LT1 cam would be going in a 350, when i finally do the swap. The vortec cam would probably be used with the stock rocker arms just to give alittle bit more power, and really complement the Performer TBI intake, 2400 stall torque converter, and pro built tranny. I was also thinking about just going with an L98 cam and 1.5 rocker arms. This all might need to be held off for awhile because i might need a new computer, my 3 year old compaq notebook runs like crap.
