67 327 conversion to TBI

Hi Guys,
I am a new guy to your site. I read the letter in my new issue of CHP yesterday and thought this would the ideal site for me. I am (restofying) my 67 Camaro Coupe with the original numbers matching 327. I have a TBI system from a 88 Chevy truck with a 305. I wanted the TBI for a little better low end torque and fuel mileage. I will be using Dart 165 cc heads with 2.02/1.94 valves and match/pocket porting, Crane gold series roller rockers (1.5), Comp cams retro roller lifters and ZZ3 cam (208/221 @.050 and .474/.510 with 112 LSA) small tube headers through mufflers, TH700R4, 3.31:1 rear gears. I want the best fuel mileage and power I can get. This will be a semi-full time driver. I hope I am not out of place with asking on the Third Gen Forum. Should I machine the TB to 1 13/16th and then blend each opening for a smooth flow, add a 1/4 inch spacer and relieve it, on the back side, for the fuel lines and clean and grind the throttle shaft and use round head bolts? I have already made the press. reg. adjustable. I am new to the TBI set ups but am an Electronics Tech. and can probably understand most of what you guys are talking about. I guess what I really need is info. and guidance on installing and having the system tuned. I know this can really be a great setup but do need help. Thanks for listening to my running on. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Ken Switzer, Vicksburg, Mississippi.

Welcome aboard man. Although this is not 3rd gen I usually allow TBI threads that are for other small blocks simply because the info can be used in reverse. There are many people who take other small blocks and use TBI on it in their 3rd gen. The info ends up being the exact same.

Ok to the point. I would not even bother with TBI for your set-up. The little bit of fuel economy and drivability that you pick up with TBI will ultimately sacrificed some power as oppsed to a carb set-up. If you do go with the swap I would look into a carb intake with a TBI adapter plate, holley 670 or GM 454 TBI units, and lots and lots of chip work. That will be your biggest obsticle but the cam you have selected shouldn't be to bad to work with. You are also going to need a pretty good fuel pump that is capable of producing 15psi or more at wot. I would basically keep the ECM, wiring harness and sensors from your donor truck and ditch the rest. You may want to use the stock TBI unit and injectors to help get the car dialed in but a larger unit will be in store down the road. The only problem I see with this is picking out the correct ECS module and knock sensor.

Thanks much, ShiftyC.
I did enjoy your letter in CHP. I will probably take your advice and buy a Edelbrock. I have several good intakes for it. I also have a 1948 Stylemaster I want to use for a fun car and have a 85 Z28 305 and a TH 350 to put in it. This TBI system will work on it because I am going to use a stock cam and heads. As I said, Thanks much for your input. I will keep reading here because this site is so informative.

There are a lot of excellent articles and threads on the DIY-ECM board about getting started into chip tuning and the equipment needed. I also think you setup would be very doable with tbi and should respond well. As far as tb's go the 1 13/16" er should be ok for the rpm range your looking to operate in. Keep us updated on your project.

Again, welcome to TGO and the tbi board.
