406 w/ TBI

i am considering doing a 406 TBI conversion, the engine is currently in a 84 Z28 with a carb, it has the 87up heads so the intake swap would be a bolt on , the carb is a 670 cfm, if i run the 406 (10.3:1 c/r) with a 272 crane cam , edlebrock intake , and 670 Holley TBI and since the cam is a non roller i am going to use a knock sensor from a LT4 (less sensitive) to prevent unwanted retard worth while project? willl the engine make respectable power with this combo

Sounds like it would run fine. Would want to tune it but its a relatively low revving setup so it should work ok with a stock ecm with just a chip. Also, any old knock sensor will work with a hydrolic flat tappet cam. Probably a 350 sensor and module would be as close as you could get for a 400.

the engine is going in a 89 S10 Blazer, i checked around the S10 forums , and most of those guys don't know **** about **** , so back to here i came , would putting vortec heads and intake on the engine make a noticable difference? i have heard 30+ hp gains over stock heads? a 250 hp engine in that blazer would be plenty for what i want... it's going to be a daily driver and i am hoping for 18+ mpg....right now with the 213,000 mile TBI 4.3 it gets 19...and has about 150hp.....250hp and the same mpg would be great...sound possible?

Even with smog heads it could make 250 HP. I think you should be good to go. BTW, whats the LSA on that cam? If its 110 itll make tuning it interesting, but not impossible.

If you havnt already, check out the DIY-Prom forum. Dont be intimidated by all the more advanced stuff. You can concentrate on timing, fuel, and idle and get about 90% of the way there to a good tune.

the LSA is 114* ...i had the cam in the engine before and it made good vacuum at a idle and the idle was suprizingly smooth , bairly ripple a glass of water on the air cleaner...i will probably call a reputable chip maker and give them the info on my engine , tire size, vehicle weight and all that good jargan and let them burn me a chip... i don't plan on turning the engine anymore than about 5200-5500 rpm so i don't need a super high performance chip...just gonna be a driver that my see some stop light action and a few passes at the strip for fun
