Get a fuel pressure gauge, and see if you have any fuel pressure.

The ghetto way to do it is to take off the distributor cap (or remove all of the spark plug wires), and remove one spark plug. If fuel comes out, you know fuel is getting to the combustion chamber. Cover the spark plug hole with a rag, so fuel doesn't get everywhere. A second person to crank turn the key helps.

What happened when the car shut off?

easy way to tell ghetto,
1)have your battery ready to be disconected quickly
2)crack key word crack.a line and see if fuel starts gushing when someone turns the key onbe ready to retighten important disconect the battery dont relie on the key to shut her down

Rent/buy a fuel pump tester and check your feed line fuel pressure. If you see less than 10psi you will need a new pump. A dying pump may provide fuel to the motor giving you the impression that the pump is fine, so don't be fooled. A dying TBI pump can still produce 6psi and a nice fuel cone out of the injctors, but the motor won't run.
