Open Element...What does it take to install?

What does it take to install an open element air filter? Do you need to buy a new base and lid also? How easy is it to put in? Anything else you need to buy?

I just installed my new 14X3 k&n open element and let me tell you it makes a difference. Sounds awesome over 2500 rpms too. But i got the nondrop base and didnt have to remove the gold ring or extend the bolt to install it. In fact when i tried to remove the gold ring it wouldnt seal, it was being blocked from sealing by a few wires so the back of the base would not touch the tbi unit. So i put the gold ring back on and it fits just fine. I have a 91 RS with tbi...anybody have any clue as to why it fit with the gold ring on? Does it make a difference?

Maybe it is a dropbase, if so, is there any disadvantage to the drop base compared to nondrop. The pictures helped out very very much. If it wasnt for the fact that i went to the hardware store before trying it out, (which might i add, didnt have the piece i was looking for so had to go to 3 different stores before i said screw it and went home and tried it) it would have only taken me 5 minutes to do. Pictures were awesome! thanks for the help.

advantage is nothing you would probably notice.
if somebody switched you from a drop to non drop, or vice versa. without you knowing, id pay money to the guy who noticed.

(money statement for effect only, not really)

I couldn't get the 14" to fit 'cause the throttle linkage was in the damn way. I had to go to the 10" edelbrock. Sounds like a Hoover vaccum over 2500 RPM VRrrrooooooommmmm.
