Try using SNOW BOWL toilet bowl cleaner. The stuff also works on rims.

Relocate to nearest trash recepticle, and replace with a block off valve

Do not use any solvents on the valve. Most EGRs have a positive or negative backpressure pilot valve in the diaphragm housing, and the rubber used on the pilot valve seal is engineered to resist high heat, not solvents. Damaging the pilot valve can render the EGR useless.

Clean the pintle and seat areas with a stiff wire brush and a soap and water solution only. A steel-bristled soldering flux brush works well for this.

If you're thinking about removing the EGR and running without one, that's fine if you don't mind the retarded timing and lower net power. Check the archives for details.

Guess I got to agree with vader on the removal, but they sure are ugly. I do not seem to have any problems with my block off plate though. I have only Knocked out 1 time and the computer backed the timing off and my car was overheating?
