Throttle shaft problem

How the hell do you remove the "blades" from the throttle shaft ? GM screwed the two screws in on each one, and they're pressed, deformed whatever you may want to call it.

Do I drill them out ? If so, what drill bit do I need ? I tried the titanium coated one, didn't work well at all. I guess .. a carbide one ???

Forgive me for sounding really PISSED off, but the base of the throttle body, is the one I did the Ultimate TBI mods to, plus clearancing for the injector pod spacer.

I have my old base but ... heck ... it's 100% stock.

Re: Throttle shaft problem

They should come out. IIRC theyre small fine thread torx screws. If they dont, try slotting them and using a flat head. They are in tight, so it takes some effort to get them out. Let them soak in a penitrating oil for a bit beforehand. Also, Id avoid drilling at all costs.

Re: Throttle shaft problem

Yeah well they broke off, all of them. Afterwards I read on the Chevy High Performance site about a TBI unit rebuild, guess they had to use a die grinder.

Slotting might work on one of them, the rest hmmmm

Re: Throttle shaft problem

Man, that sucks. The screws center the blades, so its hard to retap those holes unless your confident that you can keep them on center, not to mention that its hardened. Might want to see if you can find a junk TBI with shaft, then. The shafts are hard as hell, and dont really wear that much, so a junk one would probably have you covered.

Re: Throttle shaft problem

Yeah well like I said, I got my old stock one, which I'll put on the car for now, but this SUCKS. That base has several hours of work into it, Ultimate TBI grinding, smoothing etc *L*

Yeah I can tell the screws themselves are really hardened too.

Let me show you where I read they used a die grinder.

If I have to get another base, I may as well use my backup intake manifold, with a spacer and bore it all out to 48mm before I swap in ported heads and LT1 cam.

Re: Throttle shaft problem

Id grind the screws flat, extract the current shaft, and steal the shaft out of the old base if time and use permit, assuming you cant get the remainder of teh screws out. If they are flattened, tehn definatly grind before trying to extract them.

Re: Throttle shaft problem

I took a look at my old one. They heat the exposed ends of teh screws to fuse them to the shafts. They do have to be ground before removal.
