Ignition problems
Hey guys. I figured I would see if anyone has any ideas. I am a bit stumped.
I have an 88 truck (I know) I am putting an engine in. Anyway I got it all buttoned up tonight and tried to fire it up. After some ignition issues (bad ground on my ignition module) it fired up. I set the base timing at 5 and plugged the timing plug back up. I fired it up ran like a dog. I checked the timing it was still at 5. I reved it up and there was no advance. The only time the engine ran smooth as at some crazy high timing like 40 degrees.
As the engine warmed up it got to where it would just die and not restart at 5 degrees. The only code I am throwing is for the timing plug. I am at a loss for what to check. I had the module checked and everything was good on it. The engine is a stock 350 out of a 92. All the electronics off the 88 stayed. The truck ran fine when I pulled the engine to stick in my 92. It should have just been a plug and play. Thanks for any ideas.

Re: Ignition problems
I had the pickup coil wires swapped. Got them swapped and runs like a champ. 11pm closed up the shop, 5 am is going to come early.
Re: Ignition problems
Glad you got er going! But how did you get pickup coil wires backwards? They only plug in one way? If backwards timing will retard instead of advance and base timing with ten wire disconnected will be off by about 5-10 degrees. So double check timing. HTH!

Re: Ignition problems
The pickup coil in my dist. doesnt have a plug. It just has 2 wires with a slip on plug on each. When I pulled the module out to clean it up I didn't remember which wire went to what terminal. I had a 50/50 shot. Now I just got a slipping 2nd gear. As soon as I get that taken care of I am thorwing it up for sale.
