Busted the threads on my crank shaft

We were pulling the crank shaft sprocket off so that i could replace my timing chain and sprockets and when we tried to thread the harmonic balancer screw back into the crank, it wouldnt go in. So that ended our night of putting the car back together. Now can i just use a tap and die set and re-thread the threads on the crank shaft. Making sure there straight, cuz i definitly dont want to buy a new crank and dont have the moneys to do so anyway. Thanks for the help guys.

I would think you have one of two options,

1. Try to use a tap and rethread it, when you do make sure you have a good cut on the crank.

2. I have never done this but I have seen my boss do it many times.....You can get a helicoil and helicoil it, but you better drill the hole square if not your screwed.

Hoped I helped

good chance all you did was mess up a few threads where the puller screw got into the crank threads, that's why they make thread protectors for pullers. i bet all you need to do is clean up the threads with a tap
