160 Thermo
160 Thermo
The other day I went into Advanced Auto Parts and asked him to get me a 160 thermostat.. He comes back with a 180 and says i dont have any 160's but heres a 180. Im like i dont need a 180 thats why i asked for a 160. He is like we dont have any 160's in stock. He said you dont want to get a 160 because it will make your car run like ****.... What should i get a 160 thermo and stay with a 180?
He told you that b/c he wanted to make money . Advance employees work off commission (spelling?) He's full of crap ! ...I have a 160 and my car runs just fine and know plenty of other people around here on this board ,there car runs just fine to . If I were you , Id say screw them and go to another parts store and get a 160 lol
I was just thinking about this again , he is right to a certain extent . If it gets real cold up there in the winter time , your car could run to cold . Ya know , its not good to overheat , but its also not good to run too cold .Plus it will take your heater longer to warm up or wont warm up like it should .
During the summer months , and warmer times of the year a 160 should be ok , but its better to ask a northerner or someone who lives in the same climate as you do about this , they really know how they work in the winter .

I just swapped from 160 to 180 today. The gauge would barely break 130 and fuel mileage kinda went down with the 160. But then again it was snowing here in Buffalo yesturday.

I would stick with a 180* with a CC car. I run a 160* only in summer (90*+ days 100% humidity). MPG will decrease slightly too.
I have a Hypertech chip and 160 stat in mine. I installed these about 2 years ago. 3 days ago I moved from mddle TN to Fort Worth TX and averaged 26 mpg at 75 mph. My understanding of using the right stat is that your ECM must be programmed to perform at a specific temp. My Hypertech chip recommends using a 160 stat to ensure proper timing and so on... I don't understand the logic in wiring a switch to cooling fans. Can one constantly watch the temp gauge and flip the switch on and off while driving? As far as the car heating up with a 160 stat, it does take longer for the car to warm up and your heater will not be as hot. I remember before I changed I could almost toast bread on my vents. Its still hot, just not scorching. Anyway, I think my small investment of a chip and stat were well worth it. It may have added a horse or two. It certainly changed the fuel air mixture because you can smell a difference in the exhaust right off the bat.
sorry for the novel!

with 160...YOU HAVE NO HEAT IN THE WINTER....NONE...IT SUCKS...180 is good....and alot of the prom burners tell you that a 180 is easier to burn with and they are gettn better results....go 180...160 is not gonna make much of a difference.

I used the 160 when my engine was running hot. New water pump, New autozone radiator, Ran cool to the point where I had to replace with a 180. The temp guage moves up only to the first mark.
Well i live in Mass and i dont drive my car in the winter... And i dont need heat. So im gonna go with the 160 cause my car is overhwating for some reason anyways.. And i replaced thermo its 180 now and replaced the waterpump but i think its my air dam causing it... Think im missing it

what about a 170*?? i live in SoCal... about 9 miles from the beach area... average temp all year round is about 70* ... summer time is 75-85* average temp... right now there is a 180* in my car... i thought a 170* might be better cause i know 305's have a history of over heating. PLUS right now my temp guage is not working at all so i really dont know how warm the car is.. i do however click on the dual spal fans whenever the car is running. so what do you guys think??
160*??
170*??
180*??
keep in mind my geographic location

160 deg thermostat.
hey bro pretty much the only reason you need to run a thermostat that low is the programming..as someone stated earlier with the hypertech chip..i also have a thermo master chip..and the sales person clearly stated you have to run a 160 deg stat with this chip...if you have done nothing like change the chip and what not...and you do live in a colder climate...atlanta here....just go with the 180.....the 160 will do absolutley nothing for you...later bro.
