87 305 Tpi Help
87 305 Tpi Help
Hey...I'm taken the drive train out of a 87 Iroc and putting it into my 79 monte carlo. I was wonder if anyone has ever moved a TPI engine too a carburated engine? I also need too know what wires I will need too keep with NO EMISSIONS. Oh it has the 5 speed tranny also. Any help would be great! thanks!
Hipn,
If you're keeping the carb, you don't need to use any of th eengine control from the TPI. If you're installing the TPI in the Monte, you'll need the entire engine wiring harness, fuel pump, ECM, all sensors, etc.

I'm not keeping the carb....I have the wiring harness and computer for the TPI....but I'm wondering what I will not need when it comes too emissions....also I need too know what wiring is important too keep? THanks again

keep it all, best thing to do is get a wiring diagram for the car your taking it out of and then for your monte for things like guages to make sure you get the right pin config, I did mine into an 87 SS monte, its a PIA at times but it was fun, if ou have any Q's email me jpotvin@rap.midco.net
Hipno,
One of the more interesting challenges will be rigging the VSS to work with the speedo in the Monte. You could remotely mount the VSS and use one of the old speedo cable "splitter" gearboxes from earlier cars that had cable-driven cruise controls.
I'm guessing that the wiring harnes from the TPI should fit well into the Monte body, so long as there is adequate room in the kick panel area for the ECM and the huge bundle of wiring to the engine compartment.
Things you'll absolutely need are:
TPS;
MAF and both its relays;
IAC motor;
CTS;
MAT sensor (which really can be replaced with a fixed resistor);
VSS;
Injectors and harness;
Cooling fan relay;
Fuel pump relay;
Detonation sensor;
EST and distributor wiring and modules;
A.I.R. diverter valve and wiring;
EVAP canister, purge solenoid, and the wiring;
And of course the oxygen sensor.
You'll need to add a fuseholder for ECM and fuel pump power, and a fusible link or circuit breaker for the fan motor.
If you can do some custom PROM burning, you can eliminate the cold start control, cold start injector, EGR solenoid and diagnostic temperature switch, T/C lockup solenoid, and even the MAF if you want to convert to speed-density. If you aren't planning on a custom PROM and/or S/D change, you'll need all of those devices, too.
This oughtta be interesting....

I'm sure someone here has done this before.....I was wondering what the best way too do the wirring is? I have the complete harness from the IROC but I dont need the whole thing? Any more suggestions?
Thanks!

what you will need is everything realated to the engine/ecm, after that nothing else is needed, it will make things easier in the long run, so basically what you want to keep is the lighting, wipers and I think thats about it, if it has cruise, that will be different, but that will also come into play with the VSS. Some the stuff may just plug right in such as the steering column plugs for the starter switch I dont think GM changed that plug for a long time but dont hold me to that. Since your working off the 79 monte, I dont think you had any emmisions to begin with, or atleast they arent in use, and I dont believe you had the computerized carb, so you wont have to deal with a lot of the orrig wiring issues.
As hind sight goes, it would be easier to get the wiring in before you put the engine back in. mark everything if you still have it in the car, or like I said before get a good wiring schematic to see what will change from your current wiring to the new wiring, the only things that may change for your guage situation will be the oil press sensor, you can still use your orrig sending unit for your car for the temp sensor. The Oil press sensor may be on the same operating range as the orriginal one and all you will have to do is wire it into your guage. The guage wiring should be the only thing you will really have to splice and dice everything else should be as said in computer language "plug and play".
