Distributor cause a code 43?

My friend recently rebuilt his engine replaced the distributor also since it had frozen up in his 90 IROC 350. He got one out of a 87 Monte Carlo SS (LG4). Now he has a persistent code 43 and it runs like crap! It will idle ok for awhile, then start idling like crap. It spits and sputters when driving it. The timing is at 6* initial so thats not the prob. He has already replaced the knock sensor too...with no luck! Are the distributors different?? He was told they are same. Any help is great!!

the parts inside could be bad and is the connection from the wiring harness going to the dist good? Mine had a code 40 something when I think the module was bad. I guess thats the name its the part where the connector comes off the harness, its what plugs into it. I'd check that
