Low fuel pressure...add an inline pump?

For one reason or another my fuel pressure is only at 40 PSI, with the regulator turned all the way up. The previous owner replaced the pump a year or two ago, but I am not sure of the brand. Now I really dont want to drop the tank to replace the pump...if it even is the problem. Everything else seems to be fine - - no crushed lines, new fuel filter, etc... so I was wondering if I could just install an inline fuel pump?? What kind should I get and where should I mount it??

Thanks

First of all, how much voltage is the fuel pump getting? How old are your injectors? they could be leaking. When you say you have the regulator "turned all the way up", i'm assuming you have an adjustable regulator. It could be the pump, but it could also be a weak diaphram spring or the diaphram valve itself not seating and/or leaking. And no, installing an inline pump isn't the best way to go because you will need to remove your old pump anyway (and don't tell me you're going to run two pumps at the same time!), at which point you could just put in a good high volume performance pump in there and be done with it. Inline pumps usually have to work a lot harder to move gas and subsequently get nice and hot and could fail on you (keeping your old pump in there will make this a lot worse).

i'll have to check the voltage at the pump and see what it's at next time i get a chance to.
As for the injectors, I haven't the slightest clue, but am guessing they are fairly new as the previous owner did a lot of work to this car.

Anyway i could pull the adjustable regulator off and test to see if its working properly??
