what will an engine rebuild cost? whats best for it?
and whats so good about getting a rebuild on my engine? i dont understand what it all means, sorry im new to the engine stuff

 

an engine rebuild is exactly what it sounds like- the entire engine is rebuilt.

i'm basing my info on what was done to my engine.

when an engine gets rebuilt, it's usually stripped right down to the bare block. all worn or damaged parts are replaced, and on my engine, the crankshaft was polished. sometimes, the cylinders might be bored out like .10 over to make the cylinder walls nice and clean, almost like new.

when the parts are all nice and clean, the engine is put back together. all gaskets are replaced, and any bolts or screws that aren't good are also replaced. parts are torqued to their correct torque and thats basically it.

Can I ask why you are considering an engine rebuild? Is there a specific problem you're trying to fix? Trying to get more performance? An engine rebuild is going to cost you at least around $1000, more if you need someone else to take the engine out an put it back in. There are also crate engines available for only a little more money then a rebuilt engine, and you get a brand spankin new engine from GM with a good warranty.

Well if theres nothing wrong with it, then just do the normal maintainence and fix problems as they come up. Dont rebuild until theres something seriously wrong.

 

I agree...if it ain't broke dont fix it.....besides, once you start modding your car...you will have no money left for the girls/boys...Or in my case, your wife will start hiding the checkbook!...

 

id go all out for mods...but its a 3.1
any ideas on what to do for more power?

 

You'd be best suited to head over to the v6 board because everyone over here is going to tell you to put in a v8. And, if you're serious about performance, that what you'll do. I would argue agianst wasting money on modding the v6, because you're going to end up with a slightly faster slow car.

However, if you just wanna tinker, things like an exhaust, playing with timing, cold air intake, lower rear gears, should all give you a small power increase. You're still going to get whooped by pretty much any v8 car, tho.
