not a thirdgen, but i need some ideas
my beater vehicle,
1988 toyota pickup, 4cylinder carbed engine, and a 4 speed manual
the truck will pull fine through 1st, and 2nd, cleanly to 5000rpm (i put a tach in, cuz i had the old one from my car, and no this truck does not have an easy life)
but when i shift to third, it starts stuttering, popping and laying down really bad untill i let all the way out of the gas, and get back in easy, let it pickup speed, then go to fourth and its fine
i'm guessing it has a loose wire somewhere involving the ignition, but its raining right now so i can't go check.
what do you people think?

Fuel supply. Either clogged fuel filter or weak fuel pump.

filter is only about 3000 miles old but it did see alot of gravel miles, could be a pump the truck has about 125000 miles on it,
the wierdest part is that it only happens in third gear, and the trannsmission has vo audible whine/grinding, or anything, unless the synchro is getting bad and its trying to double engage gears under load
