Piston Question
Piston Question
I need some help here. My dad is a marine tech that works on boats a stuff and he has some 350 pistons that apear to be in great shape lying around in our shop. The problem is that there not labeled as to what cylinder they came out of. Is there a way i can figure out where they were from just by some numbers on the pistons? here are the #'s they all have 10172859 on them then 1 has 66B, 5 have 3B, and 2 have 49A. These came out of a 2000 Volvo Penta 350 with a cracked block.

Not really... about all you can do is to find the mark on the piston that shows where the front is, and look at which way the rod is turned, that way you know if they're left side or right side... If they're not going back in the same block, it doesn't matter beyond that which cylinder they came from.
the 350 in the volve is a SBC right? If so, then all you got to do is make sure the bore is the same, to make sure it wasnt overbored, the the different piston positions doesnt matter, only make sure the the valve releis are lined up correctly in there.

I would not even bother with these pistons.
You can buy good replacement pistons like Ertel 946P
For very reasonable prices.
If the block cracked, it was subjected to some thermal
trama or detonation. So were the pistons. You'd have to find a stock bore block to install them in.
May times when you try to press these pistons off the rods
they crack.
Just not worth it.
