stupid question!!!!!!!
in what sense? if you just want to know what gear you are in, just count shifts. you will star in first, then you will feel (or hear) it shift into second, then third, then fourth, then OD. so you will hear or feel 4 shift points.
If you are asking where the OD kicks in as far as the vaccuum control, you will be better off asking in the trans/drivetrain forum. and you would be better off asking for an auto. owner. I drive stick. sorry.

Not if your just cruizin. WHy would you want it to be in drive. That would be like you throwing a bike in the easiest gear to peddle and trying to do 20mph verses dropping it down into the highest and doing less work to keep it there.

OD is just another gear which is 4th in an auto. The gear ratio of 1st in the 700R4 is 3.06 which that is why the rpms climb so fast a low speed. OD is .70 so it just decreases your rpms. The tranny will shift out of OD when there is like 1/2 throttle or more and shift into D.

u want it to stay in od if your cruising if your pulling a trailer or a boat or someting its better to take od off and if your going up and down a lot of hills its bettter to take it off
Overdirve=gear ratio of 1:1 or greater.
Overdrive gears are where the gears in the tranny are turning faster than a 1:1 ratio with the motor. So it basically makes the tranny work harder so the engine gets better gas milage and less wear. The transmission literally over drives the motor.
And just to let you know, it is actually a fifth gear. You have a four speed automatic, with overdrive. Four gears up to 1:1 and OD usually .6-.8:1 ratio.

1st gear, 2nd gear, 3rd gear, and OD, geesh. Look at the stock shift plate, it says 1,2,D, OD (but D with a cirlce around it).

No, there are only 4 gears , Thrid is 1:1 and 4th is .70.
I thought there were five gears, 1=first,2= second, d=drive,OD=overdrive, and R=RACE. WTF, you mean race isn't a gear. OH S H I T , thats right, R=Reverse!!!!!LOL!!!!!!!!!!!I would love to come across one of those four speed plus overdrive transmissions though!!LOL!!

In the UK there are many roads which are single lane, 2 way traffic, with a 60mph (97kmh) speed limit. Every time I go to work down one of these roads, I always get stuck behind a lorry (rig?) or some old lady doing 30mph (50kmh). When the Camaro is back on the road, I have the perfect vehicle for overtaking such slow moving traffic. Enough low-end torque to pull me past the obstruction in no time at all. The only thing is, if I plant my foot at 40-50mph, the transmission will kick down, not to 3rd (D) but to second. It only stays there for a second or two, and then changes to 3rd.
If I want to go down to second gear, I can select it with the shifter. I'd much prefer the car to only kick down to 3rd after about 40mph....second gear at 50 is a bit too high revving for my liking, and it's likely to give the old lady I'm overtaking a heart attack.
Any thoughts? Will the TV cable take care of this?
Thanks

Yes, when the TV cable is set properly it will upshift and downshift at the proper time. It is easy to do.
Press the D button on the adjuster and loosen the cable setting. Now, have someone floor the gas pedal while you check to see if the throttle plate is open all the way. Usually they are off a little and will wiggle. Do whatever you have to do to get it open solid. Now, with the pedal floored, press the D button and pull the cable back as hard as you can and release the button. You now have the engine, tranny and gas pedal all in sync at WOT. Mark the cable so if for some reason it gets moved you can know where to put it again. The problem with the 'self adjust method' is that it bends things and puts them permanently out of whack. It is also the full TV setting, which is theoretically what the GM method does.

Thanks very much! Once the car is back together, I shall adjust it. having the heads done at the moment. Port/polish, re-seat, valve grinding, skimming, hot tanking...the works.

Petrol......Bonnet......you're not American are you?
Umm, petrol is 78.9p per litre. That's 2.97 pounds sterling per US gallon, which is about $4.62 per US Gallon, using $1.54 USD to the English pound. Yikes!!
If you're listening Tony Blair, we'll never give up. We'll never ride bicycles to work, or buy 25 cubic inch weenie motors. You might as well lower the fuel price because until public transport is up to scratch...and by that I mean picking me up from outside my front door, and letting me smoke, listen to my own choice of CDs at whatever volume I like, I'll never set foot on a bus. Long live the V8!!!
Thank you for letting me get that off my chest.
