Need some very experienced help....
I have a 1988 pontiac firebird 2.8liter. The car keeps runs and will idle fine but when the car is hot and u press the gas it chugs and dies.. the idle will bounce around like mad from 1000 to 450 and just chug until it eventually dies. What can cause this? I changed the MAF sensor... the computer... the EGR valve and solenoid... and the voltages checked out on the TPS sensor through all stages of acceleration.. also changed the IAC valve... (but i'm not quite sure it was put in right). Anything else that any of u more experienced DIY'ers can think of? I need help... this car has been off the road for like 2 weeks now... im losin my mind... HELP!!!!
The cat converter was gutted.... the car was tuned up less then 2 months ago... the check engine light doesn't turn on... no codes... and the compression rates r fine.... I have no clue... anything else anyone can think of?
Sorry for stating the obvious but how hot is hot.
If the engine is overheating it will chug, fart, jump the tach all over the place and even quit running.
have you checked the waterpump, and thermostat for proper functioning?

I am having a similar problem except it happens when I let off the gas. Try checking your vacuum lines and see if any came loose. Also your timing chain might need replacing.
