changing balancer after balancing.....
changing balancer after balancing.....
an interesting point came up in a discussion among me and the other gear heads i work with........if you build a motor for street use and get it balanced and what not.......if you go to enter dragraces with it and they require an sfi cert. balancer......do you have to have your rotating assymble rebalanced???? even if you buy a balancer that has the same balancing as the motor (internal/external)???? for the first time a question has come up that no-body in our lil group knew the answer to.

correct answers cost more since a lot of times they require more thought. incorrect answeres require no thought at all. smartass answeres often require more thought than correct and incorrect answers combined.

If you replace it with a balancer that is exactly the same, except it's certified, then the balance will be the same.

If it's a standard neutral-balance piece coming off and it is truly neutral balanced AND the one you are putting on is a neutral balanced piece and is also truly neutral balanced, then no. Please note, however, that I have heard of some shops that drill out the back of the balancer as part of the balancing process if there isn't enough beef left in the crank. Really rare (and not good practice), but just FYI.
However, if you are running a 383 or 400 using the "offset balanced" 400-style balancer then the answer will usually be YES. Why? The balance of these pieces often varies significantly from manufacturer to manufacturer, so finding 2 totally different balancers with exactly the same balance would be a small stroke of luck.
