LT1 cam in a 305
will an LT1 cam be compatible with a carbed 305 (LG4)? I wanted to put in a new one and i was wondering if the LT1 cam would work. The one i have now is an L69 camshaft only it has smaller lobes. Wasn't a bad deal though for $50 at the englishtown swapmeet last year. I'm going back in two weeks when they have it again and i wanted to look. If the LT1 doesn't work what would work well? I know a lot of people have that cam that is X262E or whatever. I believe it's a comp cams camshaft. Thanks for your help. Oh yeah, i wouldn't want it too big. Nothing in the 5's of lift. I still need decent gas mileage. Also, any reccomendation for heads. 350 heads will fit so i was thinking LT1 heads? Anyone done any of this? Thanks.

The LT1 cam is a roller, and your motor is flat tappet... so yeah, it would fit, and probably run OK, but in order to use it in your motor you'd have to buy the original design roller lifters that all the rest of us had been using for decades before the factory came up with their genius system that requires different cast iron.
There's only one L69 camshaft, so whatever you have has smaller lobes than a L69 cam, it isn't a L69 cam.
But, you'll probably get better results with a cam that isn't compromised to work with a stock fuel inection system. The Comp XE262 works well in LG4s with stick shift or loose converters and decent gears, the XE256 is better with stock converters and the usual terrible LG4 gears (2.73 or 3.08).
Your existing heads have fair potential, enough for most 305s anyway, when ported and polished. There's a huge thread with pics about working a set of those (416 casting), find it and think about that before you spend money.
Most 350 heads will have larger combustion chambers, so your compression ratio would go drastically lower. That's not the best way to go.

thanks RB83. Yeah i meant i had the same cam specs as the L69 but smaller lobes. It's an Edelbrock cam (sig). The XE256 sounds better, and i will probably port and REALLY clean/polish the heads. What about new valves? I was going to get new rockers too. I replaced the stock cam last december and my times show how much that did
Do you know the price on the comp cam and is it the usual just slide in install?

Yeah that Edelbrock cam is pretty weak...
Replace the valve springs, those XE cams are much too aggressive for stock springs when new, let alone in a high-mileage used engine. Comp sells a kit with the cam, timing set, all the springs & hardware, and their cast steel roller-tip rockers; if you buy it that way, it's so much cheaper than buying all the pieces separately, it's like getting some of them for free. I don't know the price offhand, don't really care to be honest, but it's probably less than the Eddie (less TV programs to support). Yes, it's pretty much the same install as you're familiar with.
That is an awful time, considering a L69 5-speed car did about 15.2 off the showroom floor with the same heads, intake, and only a slightly different carb. You should have gotten down into the 15s at near 90 mph with the headers, you may have tuning issues.

yeah i know my time was bad. I still need to find out my rear gear since the one on the car now is not stock. It had posi but i broke it when i went to the track. I also had my friend's K&N off his '76 Camaro at the track and it actually clogged my open element so i bogged really bad until 3500rpms. Their is video footage of it, and in the beginning my car is slow as hell and then it picks up right after the '60. Thanks though. RB83, any idea on the cost of the kit and where to get it? Summit/Jegs should have it correct? Thanks.

I'm pretty sure the LT1 cam does not have a fuel pump lobe so you'll need to run an electric fuel pump, if you don't already have one (some LG4s did). Also, the LT1 heads are reverse flow and are incompatible on a first gen SBC.
