very confused

Ok Maybe i'm a complete idiot, but I got a question.
My friend recently told me to drive in overdrive. Before that I would just drive in D. Now it seems my first gear locks in HARD. Is this the tranny mount going? or something serious? it also lags into gears.

There's no problem driving in OD, unless you're in an area, where you go in and out of OD often as the tranny manually shifting for you. If so,then I would just leave it in D.

If you hear clunking sound beneath you that would most likely be the tranny mount.

clicky clunk

best thing to do is get on a straightaway and at a dead stop...put your tranny in first gear...brake hard and gas it...you should have a govenor on your tranny so it wont rev higher than like 2500 i think...but then proceed to gas it and when it reaches redline shift to second...then to drive then OD....then when your done pat yourself on the back for blowing your tranny...LMMFAO....sorry its early as hell and i thought that wouldve made people laugh...but if its a tranny mount youll know it...youll hit the gas and the harder you hit it the louder and more intense of a feeling youll get from the BANG....maybe you should try to use your OD a lil more often see if you can "break" it in...but if all else fails just use Drive...what the hell youve been doing it already so why the hell not....later

Most likely its the tranny mount. Under braking your torque arm might be shifting the transmission and causing it to make noise also. $12 and 10 minutes and you'll be on your way .

O.K. I 'm commiting a cardinal sin here but, I was told by the guy that built my 700r, that driving them in overdrive changes the fluid pressure, and that by driving at low speeds in overdrive will burn up the clutches. Especially in the early 700r's. Like I said that is only hear-say, I dont know if that is true or not.

As far as the noise you are hearing, I agree it is a very good possibility its your tranny mount,. But you said it went into gear hard.....shift your car from park to reverse a couple times while holding the brake, listen for the "crunching" sound. Could be universal joint, crawl underneath and rock the driveshaft and see if you get the same sound.

could be universals but maybe not. I just replaced mine and my transmission still goes into gear very hard. Wear and tear will do that. but very possible.

Just a note about Drive and Overdrive. Only use OD when doing 45mph or higher. If you're in the OD gear at lower speeds, you're putting too much strain on the trans and engine. Your car will feel much healthier if you practice this.

You should go to the tranny board and hopefully 'transfixleo' or 'ProBuilt' will answer.

I do remember asking 'trasfixleo' what other changes occur when the shifter is in OD, besides hitting fourth gear. He told me that the sprag gear stays locked in 1, 2, & D, but not in OD. You'll notice when you have it in D that while you slow down, you will feel the car downshift. That's because the sprag gear is locked.

I told him that in town between 35 and 40 MPH my car will sometimes shift into 4th and then it 1.) takes to little pedal to maintain speed so I keep pushing the throttle, then letting off, then pushing, etc. 2.) continues to lock and unlock the TC since I do that 3.) keeps floating between 3rd and 4th.

He said that if I'm not going to maintain speeds above 40 MPH, then leave it in "D". My TQ, clutch packs, and sprag gear will all thank me later on.

I'll tell you what though, that seems to be a little harder on my rear end (the car's, not my butt. ) and U-Joints, but I guess it's cheaper to replace those than the tranny.
