Air Filter Mods
Air Filter Mods
Hey,
I was wondering if someone out there has a 86 Z28 to which they have added an aftermarket air filter system. I wanna get rid of the stock system, but i don't want to have to change the hood or anything, so if anyone has done this and can tell me what parts they used and how it all worked out i would appreciate it. I'm not looking for some honkin air filter thing, just something that will add a little HP and look better thatn the stock system.

I own a 86' IROC-Z, TPI.
I cut my air boxes, and installed a pair of K&N filters, and I felt better throttle response, quite a bit actually. Felt great, worth the price IMO.
The K&N X-treme filters are nice too for carb cars. I bought one for my friends '70 Charger 500, and it made a hell of a difference! (the air filter on it was a tiny little dirty paper element originally) Sounded way better overall, now it gets the air it needs.
I really like the K&Ns myself. Good experiences with them. Anyone else have any comments?

you could go open element. it will give you more air, but it will suck in hot air from the engine compartment. i recommend this if you want to also get some kind of induction hood, cowl, ram air, whatever. you could also get a dual snorkel air cleaner off of an HO or just make your own. flows plenty of cool, dense air. theres a tech article on this site on how to make one.
but....
That's cool...thanks for the help...i was also wondering what you guys do with the vacuum hoses that are connected to the stock air clearer system when you replace it with an open element system...(like the one i'm planning to get)

If you're refering to the hose going from the valve cover up to the air cleaner, just get a breather instead. I swapped out my valve covers for much prettier, better conditions ones (for about $70) and they came with a breather... i still have the stock air cleaner, but there's no hose running to it any longer.
