loading up,and timing question
loading up,and timing question
Hi guys,
i need your help,my motor doesnt seem to have as much power as it should, seems like my old 305 would run with it,it is still loading up,could one of my spark plugs not be firing??would this cause the load up problem, and of course it wouldnt run right, also how should adjust timing on this thing?so close to having my baby back, please help....

¿"Loading up"? What is this? What is the car really doing?
You should adjust the timing for max HP on the dyno, or best ET. Odds are it will want about 10° at idle (below 500 RPM), centrifugal advance starting at about 1200 RPM and reaching about 24° above base timing by 2500 RPM for a total of around 36°, and about 10° of vacuum advance on top of all that.
Slapping a bunch of parts together is just the beginning of building a motor. Tuning it is what separates the winners from the wannabees. You have tuning issues.

why don't you go check if one of your plugs or wires isn't firing instead of having us guess at it. and it might help if you said what sort of car engine combo you have so we don't have to guess at that too.

To check if your wires are firing, you can take a screwdriver stick in the end of the wire, and lay it against some metal, but leave a gap, crank the engine and see if there is a spark arc.

You use a "dial-back" timing light and a tach and the throttle... hold the throttle at a specific RPM, measure the timing with the "dial-back" light, see of the distributor is doing something near what I described.
Disconnect the vacuum advance first. Base timing 10° @500 RPM, advance begins to increase @1000 RPM, reaches 36°@ 2500 RPM. Hold it at 2500 RPM, hook the vacuum advance back up, timing should jump up to about 46°.
What do you mean by this "loading up" business? What is the car really doing? Is it rich or is it lean? When? (idle, cruise, WOT? Primaries or secondaries?)

If you look at his other post, he said he had flames shooting out of open headers, not sure if that info is relevant RB.

alright, ill check my plugs and wires and see whats going on with that, when i get someone here to help me out,and loading up,im meaning when i would go to hit the gas,or at low rpm, only while driving,it sorta like spits and studders, and then it like clears itself up a little bit and goes,if thecar just sitting there ideling,i can hit the gas,no studders,or nothing, revs up fast,so maybe that might help, and i have nothing else done to my car, except whats in my sig, thats everything.thanks for your guys help

"Spits and stutters" is the opposite of what most of us usually mean by "loading up"... "loading up" is what happens when mass quantities of raw fuel get dumped into the intake, and the plugs load up with soot. i.e., extremely rich mixture. "Spit and stutter" usually indicates a lean condition. One look at the plugs will tell you if it's too rich - they'll be black. If they're not black, it's not "loading up".
Try some larger jets in the carb. Carb tuning is usually pretty easy: adjust the primary main jet size until the car cruises and acclerates at part throttle correctly; then get the idle set right; then adjust the secondary jets for best ET or power at WOT.

i guess i'm a little slow to catch on but i'm not sure the car i nthe sig is the same one the question is being ask about. maybe i'll list my mercades in my sig and ask questions about one of the camaros. see if that confusses anyone.
well i had pulled the one plug, before i drove it,it had been ran a few times, and it was wet,and black, ill try to adjust the carb soon as i get a chance,i have a 12.5 hour day tommorow,so i doubt it will be then,
p.s.
ede, what are you talkin about??im trying to figure it out,but i cant seem to make any sense of it,my car is in the sig,its the 84 z28,with the 350,and edelbrock heads,i havent a clue what your talkin about your mercades,or whatever.....
thanks guys.

after you click reply there is no sig to look at so if i or anyone scrolls down for info or to double check anything you have nothing to go on. it's always a very good idea to say what car/engine combo along with any other information that may be of help
