whats this mean??

a friend found a motor in his grandparent barn it has a carb on it 4bbl he says it a v8 hes sure , but it said 201 on the side of the engine, any ideas???

Are we sure this is a Chevrolet engine? A few quick dimensional checks would verify that:

Axle/Gears: 8.5", 3.42
IF it's a Chevy/GM motor, and you're talking about the side of the block then it COULD be this......

14010201...305...80-85...

....which I found at www.mortec.com

BTW, that's the same motor I have in my '83 Chevy 1/2 ton.
