Newbie Help Please!
Hello everyone. This is my first post. I recently got a 1989 automatic RS V8 from my uncle and it originally has 32,000 miles on it. Lately, I've been having a couple of problems with it. For example, when I am at a stoplight, the car tends to stall, even though it's not a manual. I have to put it back in park and restart the whole car. Sometimes it takes a couple of tries to get the car running again. Has anyone had this problem? Do you know how to fix it? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks a lot

I had this problem on my 85 TA. It would idle rough and and sometimes die at a stop sign or stoplight. I replaced the distributor cap, and the problem went away. Just a thought.

Do you have to put it back into park to start it? You should be able to start the car in neutral, too.
Click to do a on this "Tech Forum" message board for "clean IAC" .. your Idle Air Control pintle, on the IAC motor, and IAC passageway, in the throttle body, might be full of carbon. The IAC is a stepper motor- which is an "accurate" motor- each electrical pulse turns the shaft a certain # of degrees, every time. The engine knows you've come to a stop, and opens the IAC valve. But, the IAC pintle & passageway is too carbon'd up to let the correct amount of air through to keep the engine running, so the engine stalls.

And if you're interested in doing a major tuneup, as in, replacing -everything- that's in "unknown condition", check this message out: https://www.thirdgen.org/techbb2/sho...hreadid=147983 It's on the V6 forum, but it applies to you v8 guys, too. (Except you need 8 spark plugs and 8 plug wires, instead of 6.
