Please help, backfire

I am getting real fustrated here. Car has been sitting for a few months for winter, and being the genius i am, i left it with an almost empty tank.

I had to move it, and it started up fine, so i moved it and let it warm up then shut it off. Couple of hours later, went to start it up, and it cranked, but i couldn't get it past 1500 rpms. Then it would backfire and stall. And i tried this many times with the same results.

Thinking i might be sucking in some possible water in the bottom of the tank, i put in a quarter tank. Tried starting it, same results.
My carb even caught fire for a bit.

I tried putting some heet in it today. Same results, but now it backfires out the carb and the tailpipes! With flames coming out of both! What the hell is going on? Can water in the tank do this? Is it something else? I just don't get.

It sounds like you may have a sticking float, or multiple problems.

You could remove teh fuel line, check the filter, and operate the pump for a few cycles to see if clean gasoline or mud/rust comes out.
