Code 24 for MAF cars

Lately my SES light has been coming on once my car warms up and sometimes when I am braking and push the clutch in it will stall out. I pulled the codes w/ paper clip and had the car scanned and both came up with code 24 (Vehicle Speed Sensor)
I checked with local dealer for a new sensor and they said that since my car is MAF and cable driven speedo that in stock form it shouldn't have the sensor in the transmission, should be behind dash) and it was probably and aftermarket sensor that came with the performance chip and installed at the same time. Therefore I would have to contact them to get the right part. BTW the car is an 88 IROC LB9 w/ 5*spd. The chip was in the car when I purchased it 3 years ago and i'm pretty sure it is a hypertech. I've never heard of any performance chip coming with there own sensors and i didn't see any of these listed on the hypertech web-site. Is there any truth to this? And from all of the searches I've checked out on this site for vehicle speed sensors it seems that all thirdgens whether MAF or Speed Density, cable driven or electronic have the VSS sender in the tranny. CORRECT? So actually all I need is the stock sensor that mounts in the rear area of the transmission, right? If so anybody have the right p/n so I can pick one up? BTW my cruise control stopped working a few months back and my speedometer doesn't seem to register at speeds of 15mph and lower. Any info is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I believe they are mistaken. Look under you car with a flashlight. If you see ong of these, your VSS is located on the transmission, not the speedometer:

Incidentally, that is on an '86 LB9, so I'm guessing that an '88 has it in the same location. I'm thinking that the dealer may be confusing your car with an LG4 or L03 car.

If you have a cable driven speedo (89 IROC should have it) You need the little yellow box that goes on the back of the instrument cluster and reads revolutions of the speedo head.

well i can't seem to get that pic to work. anyway it looks nothing like the part pictured above

The car is cable driven and on the rear driverside of the tranny where it looks like the cable enters the tranny is this. It looks to me like this is the same area where vader's part is on the tranny in his picture above.

In the middle of the tranny is this part. What is this and is it what i am looking for

I do have an aftermarket speedo-cyberdyne digital guages that is still driven by the cable. would the vss sensor be behind this or is it on the tranny?

well i pulled the guages just for kicks to see if there was any place for a sensor behind them. no go. I found where the cable enters the stock odometer and it mounts right to that piece and there is no sensor there so it must be on the tranny somwhere. any ideas? I'm still wondering what that part is that enters the tranny an the driverside about mid-way on the unit the has two wires coming from it. I wonder if it is an aftermarket speed sensor that comes with the cyberdyne guages or if that is my culprit. Any help is greatly appreciated.

well i determined the rear most piece that enters the tranny to be the speedometer sending unit for my digital guages. It is the part which the cable enters and then goes to the transmission. you can see this part at: http://www.nordskogperformance.net/sending.html

I wouldn't think this part would be bad since my speedo still works. Anybody know where the speed sensor could be located on my car and if it is in fact the other piece that enters the transmission on the driverside about midway along the trans. housing:hail:

please help
