urgent fuel pump Question
urgent fuel pump Question
Hi my car was originally a 1986 z28 with a 305 carbed enging. i did not own the car then but now it has a 1989 corvette 350 L98. people at a shop said that the 305 came with a 9 psi fuel pump and what i need for my engine now is a 60 psi fuel pump for the 350. is this true? i was told that the people who did the engine swap before me left the 9 psi fuel pump in with the 350 and the fuel pump just broke. so i need to know if a 60 psi fuel pump is right. my car is going to another shop today so i need to know lol.

The carb motor probably had a block-mounted mechanical fuel pump, designed to put out about 5 psi. If you are still using a carb, then just use a block-mounted mechanical pump.
If you're swapping the entire L98 in, TPI and all, then you will need a FI pump, and a block-off plate for the mech pump boss on the block. Those are electric and mount in the tank, from the factory. There are also external ones you can get. The fuel lines in the engine compartment would also be quite a bit different.

Yes.
The normal fuel pressure for the L98 is somwhere in the mid 40s, it varies with engine vacuum. 60 psi is about right for the maximum pressure that kind of pump can generate.

yes you need a higher pressure pump, and it runs about $65 for a TPI pump and about $5 for a new pickup screen. 9 PSI will not feed an l98 properly. Truthfully I don't see how the car can run with that low pressure. You have to change the pump. I'm going throught the same thing right now.
