can't get the timing down....

K, well here's the scope. I just installed a 350 in my camaro. I used my old balancer. When I go by the mark in the balancer the timing is way off(can tell by the sound) and doesn't even come close to starting. I keep messing with it and got it to start, but it would only rev to about 3k. Messed with it again and now I can't even get it to start...Since I'm using my old balancer....where should the notch on the CRANK be point for TDC??? just strait up/12 o'clock???

motor is a 85 350 and balancer is from a 91 305...

Hmmmm, that seems like a bit of a tricky one to me... My 350 needed the 2:00 timing tab and I was attempting to time it at 12:00, which made for some surging, but it would definitely start, it just didn't like it much... then again, every motor's different, right? If it runs better with less timing, it would seem likely that that is your problem!
