Gas smell

I have a '91 T/A conv that has a strong gas smell in and around the area of the gas hinge when the car has above 1/2 a tank. It is still noticable below the 1/2 mark but not as bad. I remember hearing (or reading) somewhere that there was a recall about this. Does anyone know if this is true and what the issue was?

Thanks!

Yes, there was a recall. The issue was a leak that developed at teh connection between teh filler neck and tank. If you take it in for service, insist on a new tank instead of the rubber clamp repair.

If you have never done so, you might also want to hand them a new AC fuel pump and pickup filter. They have to remove the old pump to change the tank anyway, so there should be absolutely no extra labor charge for installing the new pump versus the old one. If you have a pulsation damper above the pump, replace it with a straight section of fuel line hose (about 2½"). You can get a new pump for about $104.00, plus another $4-5 for the pickup filter/sock.

Thanks, Vadar,

That was a very in thorough explanation! I appreciate the heads up to the fuel pump and pick up too.

I beleive I"m also suffering from this malady. Its definitely a noticable smell, and it lasts for about a day after I fill up. I remember reading about how a 4th gen gas tank is another drop in replacement for a 3rd gen. I'm not saying this is true. I just remember reading something about this.

A search for "4th gen gas tank" didn't turn up any meaningful links.

Vader, what is the purpose of replacing the pusation damper with a straight piece of fuel line?
