Pulling Motor, Need Tips
I have done it both ways, if you have to take the tranny out for any reason (rebuild, swap, etc, etc) then pull them together, but, if you are leaving the tranny alone then just pull the motor. you will have to support the tranny with a jack or something once you pull the motor or it will fall onto the ground. there are a few bolts over the bellhousing where it bolts to the motor that can be a pain to get to but heres how I did it and it wasn't that bad.
remove distributer from motor.
place jack under tranny.
remove tranny crossmember
lower tail end of tranny to ground
use LONG extensions to reach top bellhousing bolts and remove them.
jack tranny back up.
reinstall tranny crossmember
leave jack under tranny
remove the rest of the bellhousing bolts
after unhooking all the wires and hoses.
hook up engine lift and pull that succer out of there.
there are alot of steps I missed but I was just telling you how I got to the top bellhousing bolts.

if you have a manual trans it is only 4 bolts holding the tranny to the bellhousing. Then you can leave the trans in the car without removing the bellhousing from the engine. That is how I did it 3 weeks ago.

Helped a friend pull a 2.8 from his Camaro, we unbolted the trans first. We unbolted all of the bellhousing bolts from underneath the car. http://www.geocities.com/tomp_3rdgen for pictures!

pull the engine forward. The problem you'll run into is that the engine hoist will hit your bumper. move it around to the side to save your paint. I removed mine with the tranny in the car but I was VERY GENTLE. What I found out is that when I put the engine back in, it was easier to drop the tranny, put the engine in, and then hook up the tranny and the driveshaft. The tranny is not that hard to drop so you might do yourself a favor and take it out before removing the engine.

Am I the only one with small enough hands to unbolt the tranny from above? No extensions needed, I have long slender arms and reached in from above without any problems at all.
