gas question
I just read somewhere that my 87 Iroc L98 is made to run on regular 87 Octane gas. I already knew this but this reminded me to ask this question. For the 4 years I owned my car I used 93 octane just because I never wanted to hear it ping if there was a problem. Now with gas costing So much I was thinking about switching to 87 octane. Should I even try 87,89 to save money or continue with 93? My car has 101500 miles mods are below. I only drive it 8000 miles a year so I wont save too much if I switch

I run the 87 with my '89 L98, timing set to 8* BTDC, no ping, no knocks detected. I just turned 100K on the motor.

For daily driving high octane gas in a stock Camaro engine is a waste of money. You need to run the higher octane stuff in high compression engines only; end of story.

The TPI engines have knock sensors mounted in the block. If you are running 87 octane gas in the car it might run fine or maybe it will only appear to run fine? You might be getting very light detenation that the knock sensor is detecting before you can hear it. The computer will then pull timing out of the engine to stop the detenation. The pulled out timing will stop detenation but it will reduce power and reduce gas milage. A TPI engine has a compression ratio of 9.5 : 1 that ratio usually needs at least 89 octane fuel to stop detenation.
