it just keeps getting worse!!!
i am really starting to hate engines........
after trying to get my lifters adjusted running that stupid little tick wouldn't go away.....
so i figured it might just need to get a few miles on her and i'll try again.. so i put the covers on her and proceeded to time her.... well i got her timed and then it made the most horrible grinding noise i heard....... i tried to keep it running by giving her some throttle but she killed..... i looked at the oil and you could see tiny little bronze colored specs in it like bearing..... i knew that the lifters shouldn't have been giving me so much trouble, and come to find out they weren't..... damn bs.. i guess running rich until i git that chip took it's toll, as well as a possible blown head gasket.....
now i am having to decide to either take my losses and build me a 383 using the parts i have or maybe a 355 getting parts through my gm dealer...... i just don't know what i want to do... i know i have coolant in my oil.. i found that out when i pulled the intake and seen how much there was...
this is just bs man....... i was thinking of going and getting a stock l98 shortblock for a warranty, then having my afr's worked and milled a little to kepp the compression up.....
what ya think? i just can't make my mind up...... if i get the crate shortblock i can machine the parts i have and maybe sell them to make up the losses... i'm not really wanting a *** awful car, just somthing fast to go along with the looks of the car.... 400hp is plenty.... mods are in the sig, and i have more if ya need...

it'd be hard to hurt an engine running rich, unless you were rich enough to wash oil off the cylinder walls and i doubt that. doubt if you hurt a head gasket unless you got it too hot. you have a thrust button or bronze distributor gear? that's be my first guess as to the metal in the oil. i'd be talking to my engine builder and see what he has to say about it. sound like he may of screwed something up.

nope
the engine builder was me.....
it is an 87up block, no thrust button..... i also thought it was the cam gear but it was fine when i pulled it, it is a cast iron gear type hei with a comp cam that has a cast iron gear......
the reason i think it was a head gasket is the oil level has wen't up and it always looked like a greenish tint, light, but it was still there.........
i don't know what it might be, i have decided to pull it and check everything, and go ahead and replace the head gaskets and bearings if everything checks out ok.... better safe than sorry.....
i used a stock tpi chip with 30lb injectors for the inital starup a while back before converting to carb, when they changed the oil a while back it was black and like water
i thinks it's weird as hell.... no tale tale signs, coolant level is the same as well as no milkshake dipstick.... but the engine all of a sudden makes oil? i don't think so.......
also if everything checks out with the bearings and stuff, the engine is getting pressure checked as well as the heads......

hmm
the oil didn't smell like gas, but it has a funky smell to it.....
when it's running or when it was running it would have all kinds of bubbles in it........ that tells me coolant right there, plus the coolant looks like it has oil in it, kinda like a spill in a parking lot.....
i am getting this thing right... i have came to far to quit now..... i didn't take 2 years of mechanics to get someone else to do it.....
if it was running so rich that i have gas in my oil then it would have thrown black **** out the exhaust, which it didn't do......

I still say "sell your N20 system" That should be enough, depends on what is the problem. No need to sell her.
You havent even tore the motor down to see what happened.
Might be something simple. None the less, it is worth a look.

damn dude that blows...
waiting a year to drive it...building a motor for it, then waitng another year...
i feel for ya
what else can u sell...other then your car. I mean weve all coverd so much stuff that would be major i guess so its gotta be someting really silly...
put it to the side if u have to, youll really regret selling it.
2 weeks youll talk to the who bought it and he'll tell you that your jets were to big or that when u lined the cam up u did it
"dot-to-dot"..in which case u were adjusting the #1 intake when u should of adjusted the #6
maybe try that
a guy almost the same problem goin in another thread

ahhh
i did mine running...... you could back them off and he a light tick tick tick, then i would turn them until it stopped... i did them all this way............ she always had a tapping..... couldn't figure out where it was coming from........ but it was down in the engine... you could tell that easily......
i hate the thought of selling it... it would feel weird, but there is a time to let go and a time to keep going... and i feel i have reached the point of stoping before i have anymore money in her...... hell it's probably somthing silly knowing my luck, because every rod and main clearence oil wise was perfect! i mean right on..... i just can't figure out what happend.....
i want 7,000, yeah some people say i am out of my mind, but if you add all the things that come with it, then you will exceed 10, more than likley...... it will be hard but i just want her to have a good home with one of the thirdgenners on here so that i will know she will be taken care of.....
the price is negotible so make me an offer...... but i won't even consider rediculous offers

If you add up how much most of us have spent in parts, it will greatly exceed the value of our cars. Throw in the fact that there is metal in your oil and you could assume the engine is trash. Minus thousands of dollars there. Tearing the engine apart to find out what is wrong is free. You could part it out for more than you could sell it with a bad engine. You might even be able to fix it for cheap.
Bort, I want to say stuff like that all the time

ahhh
even if it was a rods, you would be out very little.....
all a person would have to do is have the crank turned, maybe a new set of rods, and balanced, throw in a new set of rings, and gaskets and some frost plugs and your set....... machining might need a hone and a deck if the person wanted.. and the a good washing, no need for cleaning when it was cleaned 100 miles ago..... you looking at maybe 500 at the most.. depending on what the person would want done......
i'm not parting out a perfectly good car just because of a ****ty motor problem that hasn't been determend yet..... hell my luck it was a little thing that will be nothing to fix......
everything else is new also.. from the oi pump to the intake..... all topped of with a brand new speed demon 750!
i might just go and get a crate l98 from gm and have the heads milled to 62ccs to keep up the compression and reuse everything else..... hell it would still put out 430hp with the factory l98....
