Machining of block

Connecting rod bearing went, so pulled the TBI 305 out of the 88 camaro to get it cleaned up. I am looking to see what to expect to have the block checked over and cleaned up. There was no scoring on the crank nor on the connecting rod. Just curious what to expect from a machine shop to have the block checked ofer and cleaned up. I don't want anything special done, just checked and cleaned up.

Thx.

Decking the block, is that kinda like shaving where the heads go on?

yep that's it, if i don't have a block deck i have it surfaced, sort of liek a big belt sander, only removes a few thousandths and leaves a nice clean flat surface.

I see, thanks. What should I have done though? I mean, the block has 160,000 miles, has never been tore down like this. What work should I be able to do on my own (ex. mounting hte crank, etc) since I tore it down no problems to the block with the cam, thats where I stopped, just haven't had a change to get back to work on it (new house). I don't have alot of $ and cannot afford to bore it out and have to get new pistons or what not. Thanks ALOT for the info.

Can you come pick up my old 305 and clean/bore it? With prices like that it would be worth it to rebuild it and pit it in another car.

Get the block tanked and throughly cleaned. You may not have a lot of choice on boring the block, depending on how far gone the bores are.
Summit sells a complete kit for 305 rebuild for $269. This includes; pistons (hypereutectic), main and rod bearings, freexe plugs, rings, cam bearings, oil pump, gaskets, etc.
Bearings and pistons/rings are avialable in std and over sizes.
You'd need to have a shop press the wrist pins out of the old pistons and into the new (piston to con rod).
