problems with a 305 TBI
problems with a 305 TBI
My grandpa has a 305 TBI that doesnt start without cranking it over excessively, hesitates when you romp on it and sometimes dies when you give it alot of gas. You can actually floor the pedal and it will not mov, just sit there and stutter, then after you let off to about half throttle it starts going again. I changed the O2 sensor out, and adjusted the TPS. Does anyone have any ideas?

Man, that sounds an awful lot like what my car is doing right now. I changed the filters and the rotor and it didn't help. Does his car spit out smoke or run really rough like it wants to die (until it gets warmed up)? Smell anything unusual? Gas maybe? I am taking my car to a mechanic Saturday. If he figures out the problem for sure I'll post the result here. I am actually thinking that it's the fuel pump or the fuel relay. Just an idea. l8r
3.1,
It sounds as if you're really lean or have weak spark/incorrect timing. Back to the basics - good ignition, clean throttle body, IAC, and IAC passages, and a good spray pattern from the injectors (easy to check visually on a TBI).
Once you have established ignition and fuel, check the manifold vacuum. It's possible to have an EGR that is stuck open, a large vacuum leak, or a stuck PCV.
The easy way to check the EGR is to move the diaphragm by hand while it's idling. Check mainfold vacuum at idle, and make sure the PCV valve is clean and operating.
Check the base timing. A slipped timing chain will affect both valve and ignition timing.

Soul, its smokes a little at start up.
Vader, I got a lean/rich code, so thats why I changed the O2 sensor. How do you exactly check the diaphram on the EGR? I just finshied messing with my EGR valve( The EGR valve is th thing tht sits on top of a pipe that goes to the manifold right? with wires running to it, and costs about 350 buck!?) Anyway I had mine apart earlier on my V6 and it had like 3 spring loaded things inside it. Thats about all I know about the EGR stuff
thanks.

Same deal was happening with my 305 t.b.i, but i didn't go too in depth into fixing it. I decided to pull it and put an LT1/6spd in it that I'm doing right now. Just waiting on the wiring to come back from the shop. Good luck with it anyway man. If anything, I'd check the Throttle body base gasket. That might cause something like that.

On a 305/350 the egr valve is on the left side of the intake manifold to the rear. it is round and gold,or black. it should have one vaccumline going to it. I dont know what you are messing with, but Ican assure you it is not the egr valve. put it back together and look for the egr valve and while the car is running, put you fingers under the valve and move the valve assembly up, it should be firm, but not extremely difficult, if the car sputters and wants to stall, the it is physicly working. rev up the engine and at the same time...**** it, if you want to know everything about the egr, and how to trobleshoot it, check out my site and go to technical then click on "the best damn garage on the net" Phil Parson is good, it will show you everything you need to do and know.
